The vibe shift, end of "wokeness"?

On the bright side she probably doesn't write very many tickets.
I'm guessing she probably doesn't do much of anything, doesn't jump on the mike for hot shot calls and spends most of her time trying to get off the road (if she isn't already).

My wife was a full-time CC prof but, happily, left before all of that crap started. Our son-in-law was a recent part-time CC prof in IT. A lot of his students were international, some never showed or completed assignments and he was still pressured to pass them. He gave up.

I haven’t recorded my latest podcast yet but I do put forth that the CAF should not be “inclusive” as the DEI gang want it.
Buzz Beurling had it right - there is no room for soft headedness in war.

Not sure if the CAF calls it DEI now, but nothing new about,

Seems to be pretty consistent with what is going on elsewhere. In reality, it would likely have needed to be scaled down significantly for next year, as the City of Toronto's ability to support it will likely be minimal with the World Cup going on at the same time.

More like Toronto Fraud.

It seems the UK can't take a 'woke joke' ;)

A comedy writer’s arrest supercharges a transatlantic debate about free speech in Britain

Armed police officers are a rare sight in Britain, but the Irish comedian Graham Linehan was met by five of them when he landed at London’s Heathrow Airport from Arizona on Monday, before being arrested, searched and questioned.

The reason? Three posts he wrote on X in April, Linehan claimed on his Substack.

“If a trans-identified male is in a female-only space, he is committing a violent, abusive act,” Linehan wrote in one of them, in reference to trans women. “Make a scene, call the cops and if all else fails, punch him in the balls.”

Without naming Linehan – the co-creator of the sitcom “Father Ted” who is a gender critical activist – London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed it had arrested a man in his 50s “on suspicion of inciting violence.”

And we have police chiefs telling us to "comply with the criminals"

Not a lot of difference here.

While it's been years since I've been to the UK or passed through Heathrow Airport, one of the things I noticed, even going back to the 1980s, was that every uniformed police officer I saw in the airport was armed (a goodly portion of them with MP5s). I don't know if plainclothes officers at that venue were armed, but then, I wouldn't know if a guy wearing a cheap business suit was a plainclothes police officer.

As for the subject of this interruption, he was returning to the UK to attend his criminal trial for harassment (including on-line) and damage. In the unlikely circumstance that his name wasn't already flagged, it would not be surprising that, if his reason for entering the UK was questioned and he answered truthfully, he would be subject to further scrutiny.

Any potential for backtalk aside, it wasn't that long ago that being Irish would have been suspicious enough.

Its not now??? ;)

In some cases, with good reason ;)

Terrorism on the Rise in Ireland: Implications and Possible Solutions By: Olivia Tucker

In 2023, the threat level in Northern Ireland for terrorism was raised from “substantial” to “severe,” indicating that an attack is highly likely.[1] This increase is a result of heightened terrorist activity from various dissident republican groups, including the New Irish Republican Army (New IRA).[2]

UK and Germany are competing to see who can destroy their country faster.

We in North America underestimate the extent to which the negative aspects of 'tribal behaviour' can be destructive in the wrong hands in much of Europe. People kill each other for backing the wrong soccer teams, after all. Controlling 'hateful speech' is a higher priority for them as a result.

Luckily though, the woke fad is fading...

The Future of Woke:

"The slide from identity politics into wokeness had two factors behind it. The first was a kind of elite panic at the emergence of a genuinely populist movement behind Sanders. The second was an understandable anxiousness within the broader culture to address racism after Floyd’s murder. Both of these reasons have by now abated substantially. Most important, the insurgent populist campaign within the Democratic Party today is considerably weakened, if not marginalized altogether. While the Sanders left continues to have some influence, there is no sign of its potentially upending the Democratic electoral coalition. On top of that, even if matters of race continue to be salient in the political culture, they no longer hold the public’s attention the way they did five years ago. This means that the propulsive forces that pushed identity politics into its more militant and intolerant forms are no longer as strong as they were.

There is genuine concern within the Democratic Party and public institutions that the illiberalism and authoritarianism associated with wokeness have fueled a public backlash. And this backlash has empowered political and social groups that have always been hostile not just to wokery but to the entire civil rights agenda. Under the protection of Trump, figures like Elon Musk, Christopher Rufo, Peter Thiel, and others have been emboldened to make inroads under the banner of opposing wokeness into many of the substantive reforms that the movements of the ‘60s actually achieved. Democrats are thus much less committed to promoting woke culture than they were in 2021. With the threat of a populist wave now receding on the political horizon, it is clear that the business community no longer feels it necessary to absorb the personal and organizational costs of wokeness.

With none of the real power centers giving it any real support, it is likely that wokeness will retreat to a more conventional style of identity politics. Certainly in the corporate world the die has been cast to expunge the practices most directly associated with wokeness—DEI, anti-racist training, etc. But even in academia, the elevation of antiracism to a central place in the educational mission is unlikely to continue. Indeed, the more likely outcome is a rollback of longstanding measures, like protections for minorities and the disabled, which conservatives now see as achievable under the banner of antiwokeness. What seems firmly out of reach, given the current balance of forces, is a return to the social democratic version of anti-racism. That will require a great deal more political and organizational change."

Government censorship results in only the government's message getting read or heard.

That has always proven to be avery, very dangerous thing.

"According to data from a UNESCO study conducted in 2022, 85 percent of the world population has experienced a decline in freedom of speech and media freedom in recent years"

"Censorship of media and free speech continues to be a pressing global issue. Millions of people each day are blinded from the truth by cherry-picked media that governments have curated to display whatever information—true or not—that will keep them in power. The specific situations in Venezuela and Poland are just two examples out of many more. It is illuminating to note the diverse backgrounds of each of these countries; both Venezuela and Poland experience issues of free speech despite their vastly different histories. This underscores the reality that truly any country is susceptible to censorship and stifling of voices."

We've all experienced the liberal bias preferred by the CBC, CTV, etc. From innuendo to outright lies. Our government already controls our media. If bribery is too strong a word for some, you can call it grants. Call it what you want, but the fact is, much main stream media is an arm of the government now. You dance with the one paying for the date.

More than 425 arrested at rally against Palestine Action ban in London

More than 425 people have been arrested at a demonstration against the government's ban of the campaign group Palestine Action.

Hundreds gathered in Parliament Square in central London to oppose the group's proscription, some holding placards that read: "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action."

The Metropolitan Police said the majority of arrests were for supporting a proscribed organisation. More than 25 people were arrested for assaults on police officers and other public order offences.

The government proscribed Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act in July, making membership of or support of the group a criminal offence, punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
