DNAinfo.com, 5 Dec 2014The city is putting the brakes on spinning playground equipment following reports of injuries, a Parks Department spokeswoman said.
Rotating metal saucers that kids ride at two Park Slope playgrounds were recently welded into place so they can't move, and the city has made similar modifications or removed a total of seven disks citywide "in the interest of public safety," the spokeswoman said.
The spokeswoman declined to discuss how many injuries had been reported or other specifics.
Turning the spinning disks into statues angered Park Slope parents, who said the city was going too far to protect kids.
“I think it sucks,” said dad David Friedlander, whose 2-year-old was disappointed to find the the spinning disk at Vanderbilt Playground in Prospect Park suddenly stuck in place in late November. “I think it's a sad commentary on how litigious and afraid we've become of having our children get a few boo-boos."
Friedlander said his son had tumbled off the disk — which is about 4 feet wide and stands about 2 feet off the ground — onto the rubberized ground below, but he doesn't consider the equipment a safety hazard. Friedlander said it should be up to parents to decide if their children can handle playing on the saucer, not the city ....

A Thai monk may need some extra meditation sessions after a video was posted to YouTube of him slapping an English teacher for offering his seat to two women on a train.
The video was taken by a fellow passenger sitting across the aisle from the man, who is identified in a Facebook post only as Jeff, who speaks with what sounds like an Australian accent.
It shows the monk standing next to Jeff, who is seated, and slapping him hard across the left cheek. He says something angrily in Thai, but there is no translation.
All the while, Jeff remains in his seat.

A Twitter account linked to the hacker group Anonymous warns Iggy Azalea to apologize to hip hop artist Azealia Banks and New York protesters, or it will release still images from an alleged "X rated tape" belonging to the Australian rapper.
"You have exactly 48 hours from now to release a statement apologizing to @AzealiaBanks and the protesters in NYC," reads a message posted Saturday from the now-defunct account @TheAnonMessage, and captured by Vulture.com.
"You are guilty of misappropriating black culture, insulting peaceful protesters and making light of Eric Garner's death," read another message.
"There's an X rated tape of you, we bet you'd certainly don't want public, are we right? @IGGYAZALEA....and this is nothing. Comply or else."
Twitter has since suspended the account.
Azalea has previously denied the existence of a sex tape, and has said: "Anyone who releases or attempts to make profit off someone else's intimate moments against their will is a sex offender."
It's not immediately clear what Azalea might have done to "make light' of the death of Garner, an unarmed black man, and the nationwide protest movement against police brutality.
Threats refer to ongoing feud
The threat appears to relate back to a public feud between Banks and Azalea that heated up when Banks slammed Azalea in an outspoken radio interview last week in New York in which she complained about the cultural appropriation of black culture by white hip hop artists.
"That Iggy Azalea s--t isn't better than any f--king black girl that's rapping today," Banks said to New York's Hot 97.
The 23-year-old also suggested that Azalea didn't deserve her recent Grammy nomination for best rap album because her music "is not excellent" and doesn't deserve to compete "against black culture."
Azalea took issue with Bank's comments, responding on Twitter, "There are many black artists succeeding in all genres. The reason you haven't is because of your p--s poor attitude."
Neither Azalea nor Banks has publicly commented on the Anonymous threat.
Ancient Martian civilisation was wiped out by nuclear bomb-wielding aliens - and they could attack Earth next, claims physicist
Scientist is to present his theory that ancient life on Mars was massacred
Dr Brandenburg is giving a talk on his research tomorrow in Illinois
He says there is evidence for two nuclear explosions on Mars
These apparently wiped out two races - the Cydonians and Utopians
Detection of uranium and thorium on the surface is evidence for these past explosions, he claims
And he warns we should be wary of a similar attack on Earth

If you're planning to go to the 2014 Annual Fall Meeting of the American Physical Society in Illinois this Saturday, you might be in for a bit of a surprise with the final talk of the day.
Because that's when plasma physicist Dr John Brandenburg will present his theory that an ancient civilisation on Mars was wiped out by a nuclear attack from another alien race.
In his bizarre theory, Dr Brandenburg says ancient Martians known as Cydonians and Utopians were massacred in the attack - and evidence of the genocide can still be seen today.

Back in 2011 the scientist first postulated that the red colour on Mars could have been due to a naturally occurring thermonuclear explosion.
'The Martian surface is covered with a thin layer of radioactive substances including uranium, thorium and radioactive potassium - and this pattern radiates from a hot spot on Mars,' he told Fox News at the time.
'A nuclear explosion could have sent debris all around the planet.'
WHO IS DR BRANDENBURG?
Aside from this outlandish theory, Dr John Brandenburg has led a rather more normal, and prestigious, career.
He has a PhD in Theoretical Plasma Physics from the University of California at Davis.
Currently he works as a plasma physicist at Orbital Technologies in Madison Wisconsin.
He has worked on a variety of propulsion technologies and previously was an independent consultant on Space Missile Defense and Directed Energy Weapons.
Dr Brandenburg has authored a number of books with his latest, Death on Mars: The Discovery of a Planetary Nuclear Massacre, to be published in February 2015.
But since then he has advanced his theory to the level that he now no longer thinks it was a naturally occurring explosion - but rather one planned by an intelligent alien race.
According to Vice, the conclusion of his latest paper says that nuclear isotopes in the atmosphere resembling hydrogen bomb tests 'may present an example of civilisation wiped out by a nuclear attack from space.'
His research centres around the 'high concentration' of Xenon-129 in the Martian atmosphere, and uranium and thorium on the surface, spotted by Nasa's Mars Odyssey spacecraft.
Scientists have previously pointed about that the appearance of these elements is not surprising, as they are natural elements found everywhere.
But Dr Brandenburg is adamant they are the remnants of two nuclear explosions on the surface.
He will lay out his research tomorrow in his talk titled 'Evidence of Massive Thermonuclear Explosions in Mars Past, The Cydonian Hypothesis, and Fermi's Paradox'.
And he is also apparently set to have a paper published in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics.
Dr Brandenburg says evidence for the explosions exists near two sites that apparently had life in the past, including Cydonia, the location of the famous 'face on Mars' spotted from orbit (shown)
Later images showed the 'face on Mars' was just a chance alignment of shifting dust dunes (pictured)

He says Mars once had an Earth-like climate home to animal and plant life, and any intelligent life would have been about as advanced as the ancient Egyptians on Earth.
This is based on his analysis of two regions, one being Cydonia, where the infamous - and later discredited - 'face on Mars' was found.
This, according to Dr Brandenburg, is an artefact from the ancient alien race.
Here, one of the supposed nuclear explosions wiped out the civilisation at Cydonia Mensa and another, smaller one destroyed a civilisation at a region called Galaxias Chaos.
'Analysis of new images from Odyssey, MRO and Mars Express orbiters now show strong evidence of eroded archeological objects at these sites,' he writes in the abstract for his research to be presented tomorrow.
'Taken together, the data requires that the hypothesis of Mars as the site of an ancient planetary nuclear massacre, must now be considered.'

Dr Brandenburg says his theory could explain the Fermi Paradox - namely why, if the universe is abundant with life, we haven't heard anything from anyone else yet.
He warns, though, that we need to be fearful of an attack on our own planet, and should mount a manned mission to Mars to know what we're up against.
'Providentially, we are forewarned of this possible aspect of the cosmos,' he writes.
'The author therefore advocates that a human mission to Mars is mounted immediately to maximise knowledge of what occurred.'
UFO expert Nigel Watson, author of the Haynes UFO Investigation Manual, told MailOnline that Dr Brandenburg is not the first to suggest Mars was 'murdered' by nuclear explosions.
'These stories and many variations of them present a view that our Solar System was the home of several nuclear battles raged between alien visitors and settlers,' he said.
'Much of the evidence is either channeled through automatic writing, psychic messages or the interpretation of ancient texts.
'Although Brandenburg's theory is on more solid ground, it still amounts to speculation based on our present day awareness of the power of nuclear weapons and our fear of its misuse.
'It is a warning that we could do the same to our own planet, and underlines the belief of many scientists that we have not detected intelligent life elsewhere in the universe because at some point civilisations will become extinct either through catastrophe or self-destruction.'

PENNSYLVANIA BURGLAR MASTURBATES, STEALS DOG, GETS SHOT: COPS
Police say a burglar masturbated in front of a woman, stole her dog and then was shot while trying to break into another unit in a Bensalem, Pennsylvania apartment complex on Sunday evening, NBC Philadelphia reports.
After the man left the woman's second-floor apartment through a window, he tried to break into an apartment on the first floor, police told NBC. A resident inside that apartment allegedly took out a gun and shot him.
The burglary suspect, believed to be about 21 years old, was in critical condition in hospital early Monday, NBC reported. He wasn't identified.
Police told NBC they don't expect to charge the shooter.
Bensalem is located about 30 km northeast of Philadelphia.
Testifying about a request for a protective order against him, race car driver Kurt Busch told a Dover, Del., court this week that his former girlfriend is an assassin. Patricia Driscoll, who dated Busch for four years, requested the order last November, shortly after their relationship ended.
Driscoll has also filed a criminal complaint against Busch, alleging that he grabbed her and slammed her head into the wall of his motor coach at Dover International Speedway last fall. Busch denies those claims, which the authorities have been considering separately.
Those circumstances brought about four days of testimony from Busch and Driscoll that almost certainly stands unique among anything ever heard in a family court.
The former NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, 36, said that Driscoll "is a trained assassin dispatched on covert missions around the world," The Associated Press reports. The news agency adds: "Busch said Driscoll repeatedly asserted her assassin status and claimed the work took her on missions across Central and South America and Africa."
"Everybody on the outside can tell me I'm crazy, but I lived on the inside and saw it firsthand," Busch said.
From USA Today:
"Busch offered up specific examples of her returning from missions, sometimes with bruises.
"Once, he said, they were in El Paso, Texas, where Driscoll had left that night in camouflage and boots. She returned later to the hotel at which he was staying wearing a trench coat. Under it she was wearing an evening gown splattered with blood and other matter, Busch testified."
Those details add to a picture that was painted earlier, when Busch and others testified "that Driscoll claimed she was a trained assassin who had killed people, including drug lords," the AP reported Monday.
Busch and his attorney, Rusty Hardin, are holding up Driscoll's status as a mercenary to refute her claims that she was abused.
"I know that she could take me down at any moment," Busch told his attorney Monday, "because she's a bad-ass."
Local TV station WBOC notes, "Neither Driscoll nor her attorney refuted testimony about her telling people she was a trained assassin."
Driscoll, 37, lives in Ellicott City, Md. She heads two organizations, both of them based in Washington, D.C. One is the Armed Forces Foundation, a veterans advocacy group that partners with NASCAR. The other is Frontline Defense Systems, whose website says Driscoll "spent the majority of her career in the narcotics and intelligence world."
RICHMOND, Va. — Joseph D. Morrissey left his jail cell for the day and headed to a tiny office cluttered with moving boxes next to the state Capitol, where he took an oath of office to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates.
One day after winning re-election, the state delegate brought new drama to the oldest continuous law-making body in the New World: a jailed legislator who makes laws by day on work release and gets locked up again by night.
That unwelcome first left the rest of the House wondering just what to do with Morrissey, a Democrat-turned-independent serving a six-month term stemming from his relationship with a 17-year-old former receptionist at his law firm.
As they consider whether to discipline or even expel Morrissey, House members are wrestling with constitutional questions as well as the shame of yet another tawdry episode in a state unaccustomed to political scandal. The newly elected Morrissey returned to Virginia’s stately Capitol just a week after former governor Robert F. McDonnell received a two-year prison sentence for corruption. As if the timing weren’t convergence enough, McDonnell (R) made a surprise appearance at a prayer breakfast held Wednesday to kick off the session.
Both Republican House Speaker William J. Howell and Democratic House leaders expressed dismay at Morrissey’s victory, saying they would look to the state Constitution and House rules to guide their next steps. But some members questioned the political wisdom or even legality of ousting someone who still had the voters behind him.
By afternoon, Howell had announced that they were still thinking on the matter and would not take any action by day’s end.
“The Speaker and members of the House are still discussing the options and next steps,” Howell spokesman Matthew Moran said in a statement. “There will not be any announcement or action today.”
Even without any disciplinary action, l’affaire Morrissey enlivened the first day of the 2015 General Assembly session. Reporters staked out his new, seventh-floor office, diminished digs assigned to the House’s least senior member in an office building riddled with asbestos and balky plumbing.
He chose that spot over the ornate House chamber for House Clerk G. Paul Nardo to administer the oath of office, ostensibly to draw less attention to his swearing-in. But reporters crammed into the room to record the moment.
Trailed by TV cameras, Morrissey entered the chamber minutes later, sweeping past the sergeant of arms, who was holding a ceremonial gold mace in his white-gloved hands. He settled into his new seat, the least senior desk in the chamber, far to the speaker’s left and in the front row.
Peering down from him on the wall was a reminder of another House scandal, a portrait of former speaker S. Vance Wilkins Jr., who was forced out in 2002 in a sex scandal of his own, after paying $100,000 to a woman who had accused him of sexual harassment.
There was a tremendous sense of uncertainty among delegates, some of whom said privately that they would like to oust Morrissey but feared that he had outmaneuvered them by standing for reelection before the House had an opportunity to expel him. Now that the voters have embraced him again, warts and all, it is harder to boot him out, they said.
“I don’t think they can expel him based on crimes committed prior to being elected,” said state Sen. Chap Petersen (D-Fairfax City), who said he has looked at case law and predicted a lawsuit if the House pursued expulsion. Voters chose Morrissey, Petersen said, and “I think that does have meaning, legally and politically.”
In brief remarks to reporters after taking the oath, Morrissey said he was prepared to respond on the floor to any comments made about him. None came, and Morrissey, known for loquacious floor speeches, stayed mum. Throughout the session, he sat quietly, reading papers on his desk during breaks in the action.
Howell made no mention of the scandal in brief remarks to the body, but he did say that citizens expect them to serve with “honor, integrity and civility.”
There was some quiet grumbling and gallows humor expressed privately by delegates. One remarked, “This is probably about the only time that you can safely use the words ‘stupid’ and ‘voters’ in the same sentence.”
Asked what was next, Del. Jennifer L. McClellan (D-Richmond) sighed and declared herself in the dark.
“I don't know what’s gonna happen,” she said. “The whole thing is an unfortunate distraction from what we should be focused on, which is the business of the commonwealth.”
Only one delegate appeared to stop by Morrissey’s desk to say hello. It was Del. Delores L. McQuinn (D-Richmond). McQuinn said they just exchanged pleasantries, but she told a reporter that she stood by Morrissey’s right to serve.
“The voters of his district went to the polls with knowledge of everything going on and decided they would vote for him again,” she said. “I stand in support of whatever the voters have chosen.”
Morrissey also chatted a bit with his new seatmate, Del. Joseph Preston (D-Petersburg), who on Jan. 6 won a special election to replace Rosalyn R. Dance, who moved up to the state Senate. By dint of his notorious seatmate, the House newcomer had 11 TV cameras trained in his direction all afternoon.
But Preston was unfazed. In fact, he’d rubbed elbows with Morrissey in difficult circumstances before. A Petersburg attorney, Preston said he had represented Morrissey more than 20 years ago when Morrissey was sued by a client for fraud.
Preston said Morrissey prevailed in the fraud case, with a jury returning a verdict in his favor in just 11 minutes.
Running as an independent in Tuesday’s special election, Morrissey collected 42 percent of the vote against a Democrat and a Republican in a heavily Democratic district spanning the Richmond suburbs.
Voters were apparently not bothered by Morrissey’s plea last month on a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Prosecutors said that in addition to the affair, Morrissey also shared a naked photograph of the young woman while she was underage.
The 57-year-old lawmaker has maintained his innocence — accusing the receptionist’s ex-lover of hacking their phones — but he entered a guilty plea to avoid a possible conviction on felony charges. He also resigned from office, but immediately vowed to run again in the special election to replace him.
The woman, now 18 and pregnant, in a radio interview Monday denied having a sexual relationship with Morrissey. She declined to identify the father of her child, which prosecutors have said is “perhaps” Morrissey’s.
Morrissey was sentenced to six months in jail. He was accepted into a work-release program, allowing him to leave jail for up to 12 hours a day for campaign activity or to work at his law practice. The program also reduces Morrissey’s sentence to 90 days.
Henrico County Sheriff Michael Wade said Morrissey has typically left the jail at 7:30 a.m. and returned at 7:30 p.m., but for Election Day, he requested a slightly later schedule, starting at 8 a.m. — meaning results weren’t even final when he was required to report back to jail for the night.
Morrissey’s law partner, Paul Goldman, said he notified Morrissey of his win in a phone call.
Wade said Morrissey returned to jail — while doing a television interview on the way in — six or seven minutes late.
Morrissey has been allowed to drive his car, which was outfitted with a GPS device to track his movements. The procedure will continue during the session but with accommodations for the General Assembly’s unpredictable schedule, which often finds lawmakers deliberating late into the night.
Morrissey has a cell to himself at Henrico County’s Regional Jail East in New Kent County, which houses work-release inmates. A common day room is equipped with a television, Wade said.
If lawmakers move to oust Morrissey, a new spectacle could unfold involving public hearings rehashing the sordid details that landed Morrissey behind bars.
In an hour-long interview in the jailhouse lobby Wednesday morning, Morrissey warned his House colleagues not to thwart the will of the voters.
“Listen, do what you want, but you will taint and sully the Virginia General Assembly by denying the voters the people they want in there,” Morrissey said during an hour-long interview in the jailhouse lobby. As if he were directly addressing Howell, he continued: “My point is, everywhere along the line, Mr. Speaker, I have taken the high road, I have turned the other cheek, I have played the hand that was dealt me. And now you’re going to say to the people of the 74th District that you’re going to make the decision who serves. I think not.”
The process to expel or censure a delegate would begin with the filing of a resolution, which would be referred to one of several committees or a select committee created for this purpose. The committee would hold hearings before sending its recommendation to the full body. Two-thirds of delegates are needed to expel; a simple majority is required to censure.
If Morrissey is expelled, yet another special election could be called — and he could run again if he chooses. In the case of a censure, lawmakers could strip Morrissey’s committee assignments, keep him from serving on boards and commissions or suspend his floor privileges.
Morrissey left jail Wednesday in a pin-striped suit and white shirt with monogrammed cuffs; an electronic monitoring bracelet on his left ankle and his pairing of athletic socks with dress shoes were the only visual clues of his circumstances.
Morrissey encountered an unexpected obstacle when he left the jailhouse early Wednesday; his blue Jaguar, along with all the other cars in the parking lot, was encased in ice.
Morrissey eventually got a ride from the jail with a reporter — but only after two sheriff’s deputies stopped their car and rolled down the window. “Congratulations!” one said.
Scientists Figure Out How to Unboil an Egg
BY ZOË SCHLANGER 1/24/15 AT 12:28 PM

Scientists at the University of California Irvine have developed a way to unboil egg whites by “untangling” their proteins, a development that has the potential to significantly reduce costs for any biotechnology process that requires the folding of proteins.
“Yes, we have invented a way to unboil a hen egg,” UCI biochemistry professor Gregory Weiss said in a statement. “We start with egg whites boiled for 20 minutes at 90 degrees Celsius and return a key protein in the egg to working order.”
In a paper published Friday in the journal ChemBioChem, Weiss and his team of chemistry students describe a method capable of pulling apart tangled proteins and allowing them to refold.
Proteins are the workhorses within human cells. They copy DNA, and make it possible for the body to read the DNA. The folding of proteins is key to several fields; industrial chemists use it to make chemical reactions possible, and the medical industry needs to fold proteins for therapeutic treatments of diseases such as cancer. Often, though, when scientists attempt to fold proteins, they come out as “scrambled messes,” Weiss says.
“When they’re produced, they’re being jam packed into the cells at the same time as they are trying to synthesize. They get tangled up with each other and it’s a complete mess. That process is called ‘aggregation,’ and that’s what happens when you boil and egg,” Weiss explains. “This drives us nuts, as scientists, because it’s really hard to disentangle them later. Often times we have this protein that we want to study and it comes out and they’re just goo.”
To solve this, Weiss and his team invented a way to gently apply mechanical energy to pull the tangled proteins apart and give them a chance to refold.
“We start with egg whites and dissolve them in urea, so they go from a white solid to a liquid. Then we put them into a machine called a Vortex Fluid Device that spins the solution at a high speed, so the proteins are sort of gently pulled apart,” Weiss says.
The process doesn’t result in a gooey raw egg you would want to cook up and eat, because the egg white has been dissolved in other compounds. But one of the key proteins found in egg white is returned.
Weiss and his team have filed for a patent, and are raising funds to scale up the process to meet the needs of biotech companies. If all goes well, the invention has the potential to save several industries a lot of headache, and money.
A Russian weight-loss group has come under fire after it invited its followers to adopt a food regime based on the rations supplied during the Siege of Leningrad — when 630,000 people died of starvation.
The call for a "blockade diet," posted on Facebook on Tuesday by a group named "Get Thin Like Me," was timed to coincide with the 71st anniversary of the city's liberation from a Nazi siege.
Participants were asked to honor World War II veterans by eating only those products available to the population during the blockade, to "watch your figure and commemorate the Leningrad siege at the same time," the post read.
"We'll load up at the rate of factory workers doing a full day's shift in December 1941 — 400 grams of bread, and as many glasses of water as you like. Men can have 100 grams of vodka at night, but only in place of bread," the post said, followed by the recipe for "blockade bread" which, the authors said, included ingredients now only found at pet stores.
Only 20 people had signed up the Facebook event as of Tuesday afternoon ....
Man rips out another man's heart, eats it to prove he's 'not gay'
A South African man who ripped out another man's heart and ate it in order to somehow prove he wasn't gay apologized to the victim's families.
35-year-old Andrew Chimboza pleaded guilty to murdering 62-year-old Mbuyiselo Manona last year.
According to The Daily Mail, Chimboza told police he ate Manona's heart while the victim was watching, bleeding to death, to show him he was not gay.
In court, Chimboza said "I am sorry for what I have done and I have genuine remorse."
