OTTAWA — The Conservative government's announcement that it will no longer stand up for Canadians who face the death penalty in the United States is drawing fire from the opposition

The Tories have announced a change in Canada's foreign policy when it comes to Canadians on death row.

Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day has said his government will not plead for the life of Alberta-born Ronald Allen Smith, who faces lethal injection in Montana for the 1982 murder of two men.

The government also announced that it will not attempt to save other Canadians who were given the death penalty following a fair trial in democratic countries like the U.S.

Personnally, I never understood the logic of bringing convicted killers back to Canada so they could avoid the death penalty somewhere else.....it's about time.

Further, why would be interfere in the administration of justice in a foreign country simply because the offender was a citizen of OUR country?

We live in a free country.  That means you are free to leave it if you like, and visit other countries.  You are told you have to obey local laws while abroad.  If you choose not to, why does being a citizen of our country somehow allow you to escape punishment for your crimes, in a similarly free and democratic country?

(I understand why we might want to protect our citizens from unjust persecution and *injustice* while abroad, but again, if you chose to go so Country X with the repressive dictatorship, I would be tempted to allow you to reap the benefit of your free choice to visit there).

All they have said basically is that if you were given a fair trial in a country where justice is consistently and fairly applied, that they're not going to try too hard to free you from the consequences of your actions.  Oh well.  :boring:

The other shoe is American criminals fleeing to Canada to avoid the death penalty.

The opposition *may* at least appeal to the heart strings of Canadians in the first instance because the accused are Canadians (who have been convicted of commiting horrific acts), but how will they look appealing to the Canadian taxpayer to keep horrific foreign criminals in Canada?

Well my view on criminals on death row is that they gave away any human or personal right when they commited the crime. They are no longer a law abiding citizen and therefore should not be constituted as a national citizen either

Heh...
For the foreigners (incl americans) who have fled to Canada after committing a capital offense in their country - I believe they should be sent back to their country to be juged by their peers & pay the ultimate price - if so juged... Amnesty international be damned.

For Canadians who have fled back to Canada after committing a capital offense in another country - I believe they should be sent back to that country to be juged by them & pay the ultimate price - if so juged... Amnesty international be damned.

The exact same statement minus 5 words?

Most likely a cut and paste error on the second - thinking it should read:

For Canadians who have committed a capital offense in another country - I believe they should be left in that country to be juged by them & pay the ultimate price - if so juged... Amnesty international be damned. Or words to similar effect.

Oopsie.... thanks for the help teflon

Got interrupted when I was writing and ended up posting an incomplete thought.

No worries, as a Infantry Pl WO, reading what people really meant to say is only one of the many free services I provide  :)

LOL - too true...
- early training for Ptes, Cpls & MCpls is trying to figure out what the Lt Tp Commander meant without going back to ask ( and look like a dolt) and ending up looking like a dolt for doing exactly what the TC told you not to do... (understanding the longwinded instructions of a Lt is hard at the best of times) ;)

- with time and experience you become an expert in figuring out what the TC wants before he knows what he wants... anf are able to figure out what instructions mean - in spite of coming out .... a$$ backwards
