OK - when I got out in 96, people were still talking about Total Force. Reading the Medics' threads got me thinking about it again. I assume it died? Did anyone have the nads to officially declare it dead, or did it just "peter out"? Or - maybe it, or a variation thereof - is still alive. Bring me up to date, guys....

It still lurks.
Maybe it will be forgotten one day.
. . . or officially killed sooner  :soldier:

Did any of the Reserve Units go to the proposed 80/20 mix? If so, are they still operating at that level? How is/was it working?

As I understand it, the only experiment that I can remember is when a reg force battalion went to Borden for a short period of time to try the 80/20 thing.  I may be wrong (and probably am), but thats the only time I can remember of talk about it.

3 PPCLI did the 10/90 thing in BC for a few years.  That ended before the move to Edmonton.

It was doomed from the start,a dismal failure at best, thankfully it didn't last long.

1 AD Regiment(Lanark and Refrew Scottish) are they still total force or has that changed since I left the area back in '94?

1 and 18 AD are still mixed units. and probably because of the nature of AD will remain so. I don't know no of any other units. The Arty went 10/90 and it was starting to work when the plug was pulled.
Total Force still lurks. Witness the Area commands, integration of crse, the striving for the same standard, recruiting etc. We are now so intertwined, that it will never die.

And it still should.  The job remains the same whether we are reservists or regulars, and we'll die just same.  Of course a reservist will never have the same level of training as his regular counterpart, but there is no reason he shouldn't have the same level of qualifications as his counterpart (ie: skills taught).  I know OJT is an essential part of mastering your responsibilities, but I think when crunch time comes it'll be easier to brush up on skills already taught to standard than to have to start from scratch.

The Reserve Electronic Warfare Squadron in Kingston had 10% reg force personnel in it when I was there in the 90's.  I thought it was a very effective mix, and brought disparate strengths from reg and reserve together.  In 95 several of the reg force pers got posted out without being replaced, so we became a 5/95 sqn instead of 10/90.  The net result was a couple of extra class B opportunities for reservists to work on day staff, and I don't think the unit's effectiveness was diminished at all.  Over the long term though, I think it would be detrimental not to have that infusion of new ideas and experiences every posting cycle.  I didn't stick around for the long term (I left in 98), so it's hard for me to comment beyond that.

I misspoke about the same standard. That is not what I meant. What I meant was the increasing length of courses and the failure to take into account the avail of reservists to take the crses. And all these decisions are made by the Reg F because of the intergrtaed trg system.

8 CH was another 10/90 experiment.  That lasted until the Reg Force Squadron was dissolved and its members rebadged.
