Trump administration 2024-2028

I call BS on that.
ALL previous administrations have repeatedly failed to go after the people/companies that hire these illegals in the first place with fines/jail time.
Not only that but the “coyotes” who assist the illegals are making beaucoup $$ and if a few illegals die whi cares???

Have a read - Trump and team are totally disconnected with reality.

Once the US loses its farm labourers, they will face large negative consequences - food shortages - and it will have a ripple affect on us as we'll pay the price in huge price increases and shortages.

The old Roman Emperors knew that without 'Bread and Circuses' the rabble would come for their heads. History loves to repeat itself.

Trump says ‘no amnesty’ for migrant farm workers after industry warns of disruption to food supply

Trump has received complaints from farmers that the administration’s immigration raids have negatively impacted the agricultural industry. Some in the industry have gone so far as to warn of a disruption in the food supply.
Last week, Trump indicated he may defer to farmers who hire migrants without legal status. During an event in Iowa, he said, “They know better.”
During the speech, Trump said the administration is developing legislation to allow some undocumented migrants to remain in the U.S. to work on farms.

“We've got to give the farmers the people they need, but we’re not talking amnesty,” said the president.

Rollins said the program would protect farmers and ensure they have the workers they need, but added that it would not deliver amnesty.

I can't underscore enough, there will be no amnesty. The mass deportations continue, but in a strategic way.”

“And we move the workforce toward automation and 100 percent American participation, which with 34 million able-bodied on Medicaid, we should be able to do fairly quickly,” Rollins added.
According to figures from the Department of Homeland Security, roughly 42 percent of farm workers didn’t have legal status between 2020 and 2022.
California farmer Lisa Tate told Reuters last month, “In the fields, I would say 70 percent of the workers are gone.”

"If 70 percent of your workforce doesn't show up, 70 percent of your crop doesn't get picked and can go bad in one day,” she added. “Most Americans don't want to do this work. Most farmers here are barely breaking even. I fear this has created a tipping point where many will go bust."
Last month, the president appeared on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News, saying he wants to help farmers and that the administration would develop a program to hand migrant workers a “temporary pass” to stay in the country.

“I’m the strongest immigration guy that there’s ever been, but I’m also the strongest farmer guy that there’s ever been, and that includes also hotels and, you know, places where people work, a certain group of people works,” said Trump.

“We’re working on it right now,” he added. “We’re going to work it so that, some kind of a temporary pass, where people pay taxes, where the farmer can have a little control as opposed to you walk in and take everybody away.”

So again - zero repercussions to the farmers/owners for hiring illegal immigrants and 'taking away' jobs from Americans but deport, deport and deport all the illegal farm workers that are keeping the entire US (and parts of Canada) with the food they help put on the table.

EDIT:

Rollins suggests Medicaid recipients can replace deported farmworkers

Good luck with that - I've said this a number of times in the past - if the unemployed of Windsor aren't willing to take previously offered, free transportation to Harrow/Kingsville/Leamington for FT jobs at the greenhouses, why would the US expect that their Medicaid receipts would be any better?

Very normal thing for the leader of a democracy to say. Doing such a thing to NYC because you don't like who might win the Mayoral race is abhorrent, but to suggest the same for DC shows that you don't even know what you're saying (already run by congress).

Ive posted facts on here previously, which clearly stated that the worst immigration violations occcured under Bush the Elder, followed by Clinton and then Bush the Younger, but you keep telling yourself that the worst happened Biden if that helps you sleep better at night.
Doesn’t matter who was the worst, Trump was elected to clean up the illegals mess left by Biden. ICE is doing a fantastic job despite the challenges. I wish Canada would do the same.

What is the estimated number of people illegally in Canada?

What is the estimated number of people illegally in Canada?

AI suggests it's in the range of 300,000 to 500,000, this includes overstays and those where their asylum claim was rejected.

If the number is accurate than more needs to be done. I could ignore 50-60,000.... but not half a mil.

OK. I notice that "overstays" and "asylum rejected" indicate the people at least entered the country legally, though.

AI also says 20K to 500K.

Maybe we should figure out what the actual number is before we start rounding up people in parks and Home Depots.

Put that number of 500k (the high end) into perspective with the US with the 10-1 population difference. That would be 5m for the US, not the 10-11m that is the estimated number in the US. A bit of an apple to watermelon scenario here.

I can guarantee you it is not 300k +. Its a lot harder to exist in Canada undocumented. No healthcare, no SIN which means no work except for cash jobs and CBSA is actively involved in removal proceedings. If something could be done to streamline the process, it would be to hire more inland officers and pass legislation limiting clients to a max one of appeal on removal proceedings.

Its funny, yet sad, to read about all of this back and forth about a US President. I've been lucky enough to live in 5 countries, 3 in Europe and in Canada and the US. In all of this and all of my travels, I'm certain that no country obsesses more about another country than Canada does with the US. I understand that geographically we are located right next to each other, I understand that culturally we have been similar in the past (though some significant differences are appearing, I understand that are are dominated by them in both population and economy - but Ireland doesn't obsess with the UK in the same manner, Holland doesn't obsess with Germany in the same manner, Austria doesn't obsess with Germany in the same manner, Switzerland doesn't obsess with France/Germany/Italy in the same manner. We have an dependency issue that we need to address.

For many Canadians its coping mechanism to deal with their own inferiority complexes. IMHO.

I'd say less than and more unique to the Canadian experience. No other country is a middle power next door to the global hegemon. Europeans care a lot less about what their neighbours are doing because their neighbours aren't the world's largest economy, military, cultural exporter, etc. We're hyper vigilant and attentive because our neighbour has an outsized influence on our affairs, similar to how the Baltic states are hyper vigilant in regards to Russia, its just ours is far less hostile.

They’re free to enter the US legally.
My daughter who is married to a American Citizen is looking at a 2 year wait for the paperwork to process and is not allowed to work in that period or live there fulltime. While I agree with controlling the borders, they need to also fix their immigration process, their guest worker program and offer an amnesty to those that have been there for a long time with no criminal record. A lot of the ICE stuff is political theatre, while avoiding doing the hard but unpopular and boring stuff to keep the industrial wheels on.

no country obsesses more about another country than Canada does with the US.
Consider the amount that Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine, and Georgia consider Russia within the context of their own domestic situation and tell us again that Canada is an outlier in its level of concern/reflection for a comparatively powerful and non-benevolent neighbour.

Quite the leap from "do more" to "rounding people up"

OK. I notice that "overstays" and "asylum rejected" indicate the people at least entered the country legally, though.

Acknowledged it is a level less indignant than initially entering illegally. Nonetheless, they are now breaking the law. It's not at scale with what the US is dealing with, but the problem does exist. It is a question of priorities and depending on the actual number would dictate how high it is on the priority scale. I don't see anyone lighting their hair on fire over it at this time but Canadian tradition is to ignore problems until they fester.

It’s what the US is doing. It’s what Quirky suggested we do.

The leap is that we should do what they do because they do it.

I bet Trump’s next move is to entice farm families to have 10-12 kids to work the fields!
That’ll show em!!
