Lol, my first reply to this got censored. Rephrasing it to depersonalize- this is a move they may think we take seriously… I’m quite confident we will not take this move seriously, nor will we take particularly seriously any involved in deciding or defending it. In the context of geopolitics this is about as juvenile and petulant as a policy decision gets.

The image of the U.S. will continue to suffer for how the administration hamfistedly attacks the country it should have the easiest time getting along with, and the most economic motive to.

It was the American Colonies before the States - so “of America” isn’t a secondary afterthought. Initial it was THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA , as a union of individual states- after the civil war it generally became THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - singular with Federal supremacy.
Admittedly if POTUS keeps going - Mexico and Canada will probably have more States looking to join.

Amerigo Vespucci, was the explorer/merchant sailor who is generally credited with finding the land mass now knows as the Americas - and determining it to be a separate landmass - not Asia ( also he was Italian not Portuguese)
German Cartographer Martin Waldseemüller made a world map in 1507 took Amerigo’s first name, Latinized it to Americus, then to match other continent naming took the feminine form America.
Depending on what source one looks at South America was actually first named on the 1507 Waldseemüller map, and the hemispheres where not differentiated between North America and South America until 1538 with Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator did his world map

If you had spent the 5 minutes to make this your original post, then you wouldn't have had to worry about violating the political forum rules which haven't changed in years. They are evenly applied across the political spectrum so no, you were not censored.

I’m not worried. The first version was quicker to hammer out, but I like the second one better. Your application of the rules was correct, I’m just not going to pretend not to be amused that even in the current climate the current U.S. president is the beneficiary of that protection here.

I recognize it’s to protect the smooth functioning of the site, not because the DS is carrying water for him. You do what you have to do, and my apologies for my brief lapse in failing to play the game and creating work for you.
 
An American client at work today suggested that Trump and Carney should hold a sanctioned boxing match to sort things out. I was quick to point out that none of the four sanctioning bodies would support this as they would be in vastly different weight classes.

Not quite, while the 13 original states were all American colonies of England, they were not the American colonies, as England had a lot more colonies in the Americas than just those 13. The Declaration of Independence creates the group of thirteen as a group prefaced with "the": It starts by identifying them as "the thirteen United states of America."

So the thing here is that the proper and complete name of our neighbours to the South was, from the start The United States of America. It is neither a sole appropriation of the notion of the Americas - they do not prevent the continued meaning of the word for the rest of the continent (at least not until Bozo here tries to appropriate it just for the USA), nor is it incorrect in pointing that those states part of the Union are all within the American continent.

This said, Ontario didn't exist at the time of US independence. But lake Ontario already did, and for multiple hundreds of years: Ontario is the Mohawk name for the lake, which the French (who were here, and all the way to the Rockies in the West and all the way to the Gulf of Mexico to the South well before the British coastal colonies broke out of the Appalachians) adopted and kept. The Province of Ontario was so named after the lake, when it became a province, at Confederation, in 1867. Before that it was either the colony of Upper Canada or part of the colony of United Canada.

Great, you can Google (or whatever), I was going by memory of what I learned in school, which was a long time ago. Still, as I posted, America is the name that was given to the so-called New World. Everyone in North and South America could be called "Americans", in theory. The Yanks use the word in the title of their country and think that it only applies to them. They are wrong in that assumption. It applies to the whole continent, North and South. It doesn't matter, as the Yanks will continue to consider that "America" only applies to them. Doesn't really matter what Trump wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico, the rest of the world will continue to call it that.

Not just in theory, the French refer to us Quebecois as "nos cousins Americains", i.e. "our American cousins". I am informed also that the Spanish refer to the Spanish spoken in central and South America as "American Spanish"
