What a despicable world view. In this guy’s frame, nobody exists but at the stronger nation’s pleasure. So, let’s scale this down and see if it still seems rational.
I’m a fairly big guy and there’s a decent chance that I’m bigger and stronger than our MAGA fella here. By his logic, it’s perfectly acceptable for me to tell him to give me $700 or I’m gonna beat him half to death and annex his wife and F150. Is it cool to do this with kids, animals, women etc??? Where does someone like this draw the line, you need to wonder?
Ford shutting off the power is a bad idea on many levels, not the least being it affects largely states that are more supportive of Canada throughout this mess. Let’s not give our partners a reason to join the dipshits that just want to unload Shock and Awe across the st Lawrence.

Not Canadian, but HSBC Holdings immediately comes to mind. Not to be confused with HSBC Bank Canada which RBC bought in 2024.
Europe's 2nd largest bank and it has deep roots in China, fits the bill.

I'm from the Erinsville - Enterprise - Verona corridor North of Kingston.
There was real conflict between the Orange Order and the Catholics. There are stories about my grandmother having boiling water thrown at her.
Lots of fights at the church hall.

The beauty of being an immigrant is that you arrive in a new land with literally very little luggage.
My parents encouraged independent thought that my Father insisted be defensible under challenge. They did not apply for Canadian Citizen until the youngest of the foreign born was of age....which meant that I recieved my commission before I got my citizenship.
Additionally, although we discussed politics etc at the table, I am not sure I can recall who they voted for.
I have carried that on with my own son. We talk politics a lot, but he feels no compunction to vote along family lines.
I wonder if my experience might be closer to the norm these days?

Of the 6 kids that my dad's grandparents had, 4 of the 6 married non-english/scots protestants - english catholic, romanian orthodox, armenian orthodox and my dad marrying an polish/american catholic.
I'm convinced that this occurred because my grandparents left the farm right after the war. My grandfather had been running CPR's Windsor Yard during the war (moving from the village of Mount Brydges just west of London) while my grandmother and the kids continued to run the farm. Their decision to sell the farm and for him keep his job with CPR and move the family to Windsor vastly broaden their kids exposure to kids from other backgrounds. If they had stay farming around Mont Brydges I have little doubt that most of their kids would have married eng/scots prod's for spouses, the more adventuresome might have married into a local Belgian/Dutch farming family that were scattered around Mont Brydges back then.

An interesting story - the Orange Order in Canada.
It appears that they were just as wonderful, and annoying, as the lot in the old country
The relationship between Orangemen, the monarchy and its representatives was fraught with tensions. Colonial administrators in Upper Canada/ Canada West were at times thankful for their loyalty and service, and other times disparaged their penchant for violence and secrecy. The colonial assembly made some efforts to have the Order abolished in the 1820s and 1830s and even outlawed Orange parades between 1843 and 1851. Perhaps most famously, the Prince of Wales and his political advisor, the Duke of Newcastle, shunned the Orange Order during the Royal Tour of 1860. They refused to participate in any Orange displays of fidelity while they openly met with Catholic leaders in Canada East. Around 150,000 frustrated Canadian members signed a petition noting that the Prince was too tolerant toward Catholics. The Order’s Grand Master of British North America, John Hillyard Cameron, delivered the petition to Queen Victoria, who promptly disregarded it.

The Orange ruled a lot of Ontario back in the day, much like the Catholic church ran much of Quebec.
Alot arrived with their religious and cultural luggage intact. Some still do.

Being born a "prod". marrying into more "prod" and remaining a "prod" all one's life is no different than being born Hindu, marrying Hindu, and remaining Hindu all your life.

My Dad’s family were all Orange Lodge in Dunrobin. They were vehemently opposed to all things Catholic, with the exception of the Catholic dude down the road who rented them his farmyard and white horse for King Billy to ride in on and hold the festivities afterwards. Two of them also evidently had a taste for Catholic ladies, including my father. My mother is German/Irish Catholic and so I got baptized the same. Funny thing is that 3 out of 4 of my grandparents were Prods, Dad never converted and somehow I wound up a Dogan.

The Orange and the Green . . .
In the province that may be most associated with Irish (at least in our own minds), thecelebration recognition of St Patrick's Day and King Billy's Birthday Orangeman's Day may be the last holdout of the separation of Catholics and Protestants. While those two dates are not statutory public holidays in Newfoundland, they are recognized in the collective agreements of most provincial and municipal government employees as paid days off.
This screenshot from the collective agreement between Stephenville Town Council and NAPE is a standard list of paid holidays similarly found in numerous other collective agreements. You may note that this one includes "Acadia Day". There are some regional variations on the island, Stephenville being on the West Coast (traditionally the French Shore) they seem to have embraced that heritage while St. John's has the unusual (statutory) holiday of Regatta Day (first Weds in August or an alternate day if the weather is not conducive to being on the pond).
It wasn't a real issue when I was growing up, even though we had separate schools divided on religion. My grandfather had one or two interesting tales about his early years in Carbonear, but he may have been exaggerating the story about sending an Orangeman back to his side of town on King Billy's Birthday without his ears. That may have only been adapting the story of the "Saddle Hill ear-cutting incident of 1835" to suggest how they may have wished to deal with Orangemen who got drunk and obnoxious in the early years of the twentieth century.
While it's an interesting discussion about the history of sectarian preferences, it's moved past Trump's comment about Ireland. Maybe cut to a new thread?
