Hey Everyone..
Back when I was on a T6 G4 O3 cat, and was un-fit field, My OC called the Unit MO, and told him he wanted me on the field exercise, but I didn't know of that conversation at this point, but I got told by my Sgt, I was going, and there was nothing he could do, and said I would have to talk to the MO about it, so I went to MO and he told me about Phone call with OC, and said yes, I was allowed to go on the field exercise, I reminded him, I was on G4-O3 Catagory, and unfit field, he said yes I know but I will be there, so you can go.

Now this was back in 92, so nothing current.. but I have been reading now for a long time, CFAO, QR'Os, and what ever else I can find, to figure out if he was allowed to send me to the field while being listed as unfit field.

So, any medic's or medical people out there know of a reference where the MO of a unit was allowed to send unfit field personal out on field exercises ?????

Thanks Greatly for your time....

I was on TCat for about 1 1/2 years due to my back.  I was also in the Armoured Engineer Troop of 1 CER, and there were never enough qual ops.  I used to go to the UMS and get chits saying I was good for the field, with X number of limitations... basically a warm corpse in the drivers hole...

CFP 154 is the medical reference for all things adm, there's also other, less official, pubs that outline med admin procedures.

If the MO was the Physician who put you on category, or was superior in rank to the one that put you on category, it's all good so far as the category is concerned.

While med types will write "unfit field" (used to, we shouldn't be doing it anymore) there's also other issues and restrictions involved, too.  You may be unfit field because you can't be more then 10 minutes from a hospital due to some conditions that may worsen, you may in fact be "unfit broken ground" due to a lower limb or back injury.  Frequently, we used to say unfit field because someone was generally ill, and needed some time to rest.

Lots of reasons we used to say "unfit field".  The doc was almost certainly well within his rights to clear you for the field, especially as there was MO level medical support available when you were out there.

I doubt this is what you're looking for, but there it is.  Hope it settles something for you.

Yours is a prime example why we don't write "unfit field" on the medical restrictions anymore.

The MO does not send you to field.  Your Commanding Officer (or someone under his delegated authority) sends you to the field.  Your CO will be held responsible for taking you to the field against medical advice or ignoring your Medical Employment Limitations.

COs used to (prior to approx 1998) sign authorizing a Sick Leave passes, but no longer do as it is a medical decision.

Safety and protection fo the patient has come a long way, but at the peril of those who choose to misuse or abuse the medical system to avoid doing what they are capable doing, because they don't wish to.

Thanks for the replies.. Greatly apriciated...

See me one hickup is that Seeing the Unit MO couldn't do anything, I had been referred to NDMC, to Dr. Portner Dunno if he is still there or not.. But, that's who I was seeing..

So, my thing is, if I get reffered to NDMC, and I am under Portner's treatment, how can the Unit MO send me to field.. should have been up to Portner, as being a specialist.. And one report he wrote said no field... not that, that seemed to mean anything, as I said I was still sent. In my opion the MO should have said No, but he didn't..

Anyhow I will check that reference and see if I can find what I am looking for...and again thanks...

Hmmm 1 CER, I did a bridge camp with them back in 84, when I was with 1 Svc Bn... that was fun, except the cold stream from the mountain to wash in.. Burrrr that was cold..

anyhow, sorry flash back..
