Newspaper says Canadians killed in Pakistan strike
Updated Wed. Sep. 3 2008 2:18 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
Canadian diplomats in Pakistan are trying to confirm a newspaper report claiming that two Canadians have been killed by a possible U.S. missile strike in a remote region of the country.
"Four people, including two Canadians of Arab origin, were killed and two other people injured when a missile reportedly fired from Afghanistan hit a house in the Korzai area of South Waziristan on Saturday," the Internet edition of Dawn News reported.
Foreign Affairs spokesperson Rodney Moore told CTV.ca on Wednesday that "Canadian High Commission in Islamabad is aware of the news reports."
He said they are now working "with local authorities in an attempt to confirm" the reports, but had no other details about the situation.
Dawn News reported on Aug. 31 that local residents said "a plane was seen flying over the area shortly before the missile hit" a house.
The French news agency AFP quoted a local military spokesperson who said an "incident involving an explosion happened in South Waziristan but we do not know what caused the incident."
The AFP reported that the official said the house had recently been rented to "foreigners."
South Waziristan is a remote mountainous region in Pakistan that straddles the country's border with Afghanistan. U.S. officials have said it is a sanctuary for Taliban and insurgent fighters. The region has been hit on several occasions this year by U.S. missiles.
In what may be the latest NATO attack in the region, there were unconfirmed reports on Wednesday that a pre-dawn U.S.-led strike force killed 15 people, including women and children.
