This effects civilian and non-operational military drone use on DOD property. A lot of the commercially available drones used by contractors and such were banned for fear of data harvesting by the Chinese. Mapping by drones using LIDAR is becoming a major component of civil infrastructure projects.

The U.S. Department of Defense has just released a list of government approved drones. Here are the five companies that made the list.

We looked at getting a drone to use it to remotely survey parts of the ships that usually have a number of complications in getting to them (ie up the mast, or inside tanks). Would have been a simple hobbiest one with a video feed, but they are really useful for all kinds of things like that, and are apparently getting used more on really big ships to see if they need to set up scaffolding or rig up rappeling gear to to a closer inspection. Nice to know there are now 'US DoD approved' ones.
