I realize that we're on our way to new subs and all that with the 212CD having been selected, but we're going to have these boats around for a while longer.

I found a set of STL files from Nautilus Drydocks and decided to print one to see how she looks.

I used Matte Black PLA to give a better look for the anechoic tiles. I'm quite pleased with how she turned out. This one is going to be a static display piece in a cabinet, but I might end up doing another one out of PETG for durability and may make it R/C.

We'll see.

Very nice!

From a modeling perspective, what would make someone prefer using PETG vs PLA?

PLA is very susceptible to heat - ie leave it in the sun (particularly a black model like this) and things will warm, and warp.

PETG is less temperature sensitive.

I'm doing some experimentation with ASA which is even less sensitive to temperature shifts, but is a bit messy to work with in the foaming ASA that I used (think of trying to lay down a precise bead of spray foam one on top of the other....it gets....messy.)

ABS might be another option, but you would likely require an enclosure. ESun makes a high speed ABS dark grey that looks good.

I do have an enclosed printer (H2S) but haven't taken the step to ABS yet.

How much filament did that take? And is the file available for free?
