The difference between using batteries for a thermal image and IR glowsticks is about 3-4 microns (wavelength-wise).

Im not sure what that means. ???

~sigh~ A SigOp who doesn't understand wave propagation - - I'll need a second to wipe away this tear.

It comes down to the various types of equipment we use that can acquire the IR/thermal signature. The batteries can be picked up by more equipment (or less finely-tuned equipment) at greater ranges...making them better for ID'ing troops being supported.

Of course, it could also be IR glowsticks are difficult to acquire in certain units (or the QM opens the box, breaks & shakes, sees no change, so throws out the whole lot an bitches about quality control  ;D )
