Welcome to Canadaville
Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7pm ET
A Canadian good deed to help victims of hurricane Katrina is derailed by political and racial tension.
After watching the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Canadian billionaire Frank Stronach acted immediately to try to assist the victims. But, his well-intentioned creation of a new community for evacuees hit a disturbing roadblock. The CTV Original Documentary Welcome to Canadaville, airing on Saturday October 6 at 7 p.m., reveals how political and racial tension has disrupted a made-in-Canada solution to the problems created by Katrina.
In December 2005, Stronach's company Magna opened the doors of what became know as Canadaville - a new settlement providing homes, and a vision of a better life to the hard working victims of one of the worst natural disasters to hit the United States of America. Welcome to Canadaville is the story of the first year-and-a-half of this philanthropic endeavor.
The documentary examines the struggles of getting the community off the ground and the ongoing conflict with the neighboring town of Simmesport, Louisiana. Lead by disgruntled mayor Boo Fontenot, the small town turns against the project while at the same time revealing some of the local racial problems that existed well before the hurricane slammed into the southern U.S.
Welcome to Canadaville is a 90th Parallel production from filmmaker Mike Sheerin.
