What info do I need to get my grand father's service record and stuff?

I may not be able to find his service number, would name, corps (artillery) and birthday be enough?

They can usually identify the right man with basic info (unless he was Gnr Smith or something).  Place of birth/parent's names can help.

If you can't find the info required in the Stickied topic above, you can usually find leads to getting that information with, in your instance, that he was in the Artillery, and born on such and such a date in such and such a location.  If by chance you have old letters from him, you may be able to narrow down your search with information found in them.  You may find out where he served, for instance.  If you can find out where he may have enlisted, that could narrow down what unit he may have been assigned to.  The more info you can provide, will aid in quickening your search.
