Today, April 17th, we cellebrated the Liberation of Apeldoorn by the Canadian Forces 60 years ago. The ceremony was held at the lock in 'het Apeldoorns kanaalâ ?. The mayor of Apeldoorn commemorate the Canadians who liberated Apeldoorn and two resistance fighters. They went over the canal on April 16th, 1945 to get in touch wilt the Canadian Army, because the command did not know that most of the german forces already left Apeldoorn. The planned bombardment on the village of Apeldoorn was cancelled by the Canadian forces which saved a lot of lives.

To preserve the memories of this event, schools in Apeldoorn adopt war-monuments in and around Apeldoorn. Not only to take care for the monument itself, but also to occur the children what it means today, to live in freedom. The mayor declared April 17th as Liberationdayâ Å“ and it will be Commemorate and Celebrated every year in the future.
At  the HAVO-school many, many citizens visit an exposition of the years 1937 â “ 1947. The exposition displayed lots of books, newspaper-articles, photo's, postcards and there was also a movie to see of that perticullar period of time.

In â Å“het Oranjeparkâ ? thousands of citizens were gathered to see the lightning of â Å“the Torch of Freedomâ ?. Around the park a lot of vehicles of WWII were displayed and ofcourse part of â Å“the playgardenâ ? of the kids among us.
