I was wondering what the difference is between Basic summer training in Shiloh, and the regular Basic training you here about in St.Jean.  I have a cousin who went to St.Jean, is it the same thing???  I am planning on trying to apply in the communication reserves...anyone outthere that has done this, and some advice...I was looking at RMS clerk... :salute:

Thanks for all your help.... ;)

Regular Basic at St. Jean = aprox 10 weeks
Reserve Basic = aprox 4 weeks

The Basic run by the Communications Reserves School in Shilo is a combined BMQ/SQ that runs 7-8 weeks. It teaches the same Performance Objectives as is required for Basic Military Qualification and Soldier Qualification.

so does that pretty much say it is the same thing???  Same intensity as St.Jean??? Or less...what is the actually day to day life of it?? I know I have many questions...I have heard stories of St.Jean, and I admire each and every person who is capable to do it....I just dont know if I could go through that...I would love to apply and be accepted, but I know I could not do St.Jean...that is why I am asking if it is the same thing, more or less.  Is it 4 weeks and more intense?? forget it!!
a million thanks from me and my family, looking for a more secure way of life....

I'm not sure esactly what the answer you're looking for is.

The fact is, that to get a basic Military Quualification, there are certain things that need to be taught. This is the same with any of the BMQ's run in Canada. They have a shorter period of time in which to teach it in the Reserves, ie Shilo.

If by intensity, you mean how you're treated by staff, inspections, getting yelled at, rest assured that it's the same. They're still in your face, and they'll still run you and make you do push-ups into the ground. It is NOT any easier.

I can't say for sure the difference, as I've already done my Basic in Shilo, and I haven't in St. Jean. Look at it this way. It's the same, in a shorter ammount of time, and in a different place. Intensity is a standard brought on by your staff.

And keep in mind, if you fail something in St. Jean, they'll recourse you most of the time. In Shilo, they don't have that option. You go home, and your unit may send you back next year.

Hey there Mommyof3, I just graduated from 11 weeks of St. Jean.  If you have any questions, feel free to ask me :)
Cheers all

I just dont know if I could do it...be away from the family is one, but the training....being yelled at does not bother me, yell away...it the get up at 5 am to run...go go go...now now now....freaks me out abit....to be honest, I want to work in an office,  but something a little more gratifying...I mean, i would  helping our country, not working for some corporate ^%$ who already has millions..i dont want to be running around with a gun, so I guess this isnt the right option for me.  I am out of shape ( hence mommyof3), and it freaks me out.  I dont know...i just dont know...I want to be part of it, i really do, maybe I am scared of failling.....

You are your own worse enemy.  You have to overcome your own fear.

If you have children, what does getting up early change anything?

You are not like a Policeman, when you are in the CF.  You do not carry a gun with you at all times.

Just think of the Training as one of those "Confidence Building Training Courses" that you would have to pay big money to get on in a Civilian Company, but here you would get paid to do it.  ;D

Mommy, a fear of failing is a  healthy thing. It's pushing past that fear and not letting it hold you back that's important. I saw people who showed up in Shilo, and some weren't fit. Others hated the routine. Several quit. It just wasn't for them. Others kept on going, and got through.

Basic training, for one part, is about teaching you the military basics. Another part of it is about pushing you to that physical and mental wall, your breaking point. And once you're at that point, it's about forcing you to push that wall further. You never realize what you're capable of doing if you don't try it.

If the military is what you want, give it a go, but if you know that you want to apply yourself to it. If you don't at least try, you'll always have that grating in the back of your head asking yourself if you passed something worthwile up. But if you have doubts, it's your decision. You have to give it your all.

yeah..i am going to get in shape first, If I can make it to be able to do 15 pushups ( real ones) then i'll do it. Therres no point of applying and then not even pass the PT, I want to do it, just need to motivate my self

thanks alot!!! ;D

In that case, work for a small company like mine and so many others!

I would like to work for a smaller company, but unfortuntely, the smaller ones dont really pay "as well" with the benefit package I would love to have, where I live anyway...unless you are hiring???? ;)

mommyof3, you're right that the financial benefits are not the same. However, you might be able to get a more flexible schedule and better time off.

We're not hiring by the way. We're in the GTA and we do have a hard time getting staff because we can't pay the mega bucks.

mommyof3,
you're stressin' for no reason. Read this thread.
