WHO DO WE INVADE NEXT? aka geography 101

Dont think for one second that you cant find this level of ignorance here in Canada. I have met people that had no idea that PEI, and Newfoundland were two completely different provinces, nor did they know the outcome of the Second World War. I even know one person who thought Afghanistan was in South America, most of these people are also members of the CF by the way.

While there are some Canadians who aren't up on their geography don't underestimate the level of ignorance of the rest of the world in the US. I have lived in Louisville, KY for two years and North Lauderdale, FL for five and I can assure you that the 'average' American I have met at work, in my neighbourhood, or in my travels is limited in their knowledge of not only the rest of the world but often their own country.

And this isn't being mean or rude. Most of the Americans I've met are the first to admit that their education system and general attitude of 'The US is best so nothing else matters' causes this problem. A very smart programmer I worked with in Louisville said that if the guy from India didn't join their after golf group at the bar then the Americans there couldn't answer any of the geography questions.

My wife just says she is from Canada now, while I still say I'm from Calgary. I'm evil and like to see the deer in the headlight look that almost always brings  ;D

I don't know if anyone caught the part (at 1:09ish)where the correspondant asked where the US should attack from?  "North" (pointing down), "south" (pointing up), etc... and the folks he was talking to didn't even reply correctly?  The same unfortunate couple where the husband said "where are we?" when asked to place a marker in Iran.

Yikes!  But I am sure we could find some Canadians that would do the same thing.

Here is a more direct link, no need to hunt it down: http://media.skoopy.com/vids/vid_00791.wmv

CBC had a little statistical test the other night, testing the "ignorance to ones own country" factor.

Canada and the U.S. both ranked "Average"
The U.K ranked at "Poor"
Grand winner, were the Poles that ranked "excellent"

Who would have thunk it..  ;D

Also keep in mind that on the News channels (CNN for example) they show maps of where these countries are located and zoom into the cities where events are also taking place... Its nt that hard to tell the difference from middle east (THE MIDDLE OF THE EAST) to Australia....E-Literate!
