Why are officers and NCOs separated when its comes to socialising? Like, shouldn't mess dinners be combine? After all were all leaders and sharing ideas and information can be beneficial to the well being of our men and women in our unit. Can anyone clear this up for me. Please! :cdn:

The same reason that Officers aren't allowed in the SNCO and Warrant Officers mess....

My i ask what are you an RSM of ? If you were one, you would be able to answer your own question, in fact, i suspect that you wouldn't even have to ask.  Mess dinner usualy are combined SNCO and officer affairs, sometimes even JNCOs are invited to attened.

Your profile is rather blank, what are you and what, if any, experience do you have ?

Cadet maybe ?

Sometimes mess diners are combined, 2 PPCLI had a combined mess dinner when we left Winnipeg

The idea of having separate messes is to give people a place to get away from their bosses: the junior ranks can relax and socialize without having sergeants and warrants looking over their shoulders, and the sergeants and warrants can do the same away from the officers.  And both the officers and the sergeants and warrants can relax without having to worry as much about how they're going to be seen by their subordinates.

Another issue which you might pick up on from the thread on junior ranks' messes is the age of the members.  Junior ranks are, by and large, likely to be younger than sergeants and warrants, and people have different ideas of a good time as they age.  Activities (or even the atmosphere of the place) that migh appeal to 18- to 25-year-old privates and corporals might be less interesting for 40-year-old warrant officers, and vice-versa.

In some places the messes are combined.  For example, CFB Greenwood has one mess with common facilities, but a separate room for each rank group.  Everyone east and drinks together, but has a place to get away from the other rank groups as well.  In addition to that kind of arrangement, some (perhaps most or all) messes do have combined functions from time to time.

If you go back a ways in history, you will find that it used to be that officers were comprised of nobility and other "upper class" types. Could you imagine an early victorian Duke or Lord sitting back and sipping sherry with a teenaged, illiterate peasant? Furthermore, part of differentiating the messes is to not only allow the groups of either rank to b*tch about each other behind closed doors, but also to add a bit of space to the Officer-NCO-NCM relationships. As an officer or NCO, if you're really close buddies with your troops, it makes it harder to (possibly) order them to their death. Having some divide allows it to be a little easier to that job.

Oh, and unless you are actually a Regimental Sergenat Major, in which case you would know the answer to this question, you will be asked to change your username, as it is misrepresentative of your rank or position.

Another point. If the Junior Ranks ever got wind of the infantile behavior that SOMETIMES occurs in the Officers Mess, the Grande Fromages would lose a lot of credibility.  Flame away at your leisure, but I've seen things happen in the O's Mess that would get a Cpl or Sapper thrown in the digger.... IMHO, of course ;)

Think about this

Bunch of new 2lt's and Lt's...

and Sgt's... in the same room drinking...

No..  the new officers will get eaten ALIVE

Sometimes.. its better this way

I am curious as to how an RSM would ask such a question.
But if he is a cadet, lets not eat him alive. It is simply a question
and we can help them learn.

Why are junior officers not allowed in the WOs and Sgts Mess?>

Cheers.

Each level of ranks have their own messes so that the members can relax and have fun without having to worry about military protocol etc. Although some reserve units have a combined Off and Sr NCO mess.

My sincere apologies to all those concern who thought I was a real RSM. I'm sorry for giving you the wrong impression. Looking at my personal profile will undoubtedly explain everything. To all those who have answered so far, thank you.

Cheers!  :salute:

Umm, by your profile calling yourself a WO I is probably a bit OTT as well. I say that as someone who knows a number of real WO IIs and WO Is with pretty impressive military experience.

Acorn

Maybe he wanted to be called Acorn.. but someone took that...

Odd name choice.. but he says he's a civilian.

Whatever..  its not illegal.

Who knows whats real anymore.

I know it's not illegal. He could call himself CDS for all I care. It just struck me odd that he thought "WO I" was somehow a better handle for a civvy that RSM.

Given your branch Trinity, I'd be wondering about denominations if you tend to log on to chat as a 13 year old girl.   >:D

Acorn

Oh..ummm...really? Heh-heh....ummmm....you're not THAT thirteen year old girl are you? Just forget all that stuff I said, OK?

Cheers.

Just as an reminder, Acorn is in the right by questioning "WO 1"s use of the rank for a screen name.  It is in the conduct guidelines; we frown upon it for the reason that the person in question may be construed as an expert or an actual Warrant Officer 1 when they post.
