Gooday,

I've been doing some looking for winter gear for camping but am having some problems.

I will be camping in Temagami area in mid February for a course in college.

It would be great if anyone from the area or of similar climate could recomend a good but inexpensive jacket, or winter pant that suits the temp. region. Any other "cool" winter gear ideas would be great.

If you need more information please ask.

Thanks

Got some $, go to MEC in Toronto. Cost you $5 for a memerbership.  www.mec.ca

Those are just some suggestions....also get a good pair of Sorel or similar winter boots. And mittens large enough to put on thin gloves underneath.

Hmmm.... inexpensive outer clothing & cool winter gear ideas?

You have to watch your priorities.... else it you who'se going to be "cool" (COLD!) when you get out to Temagami.
My suggestion is that you concentrate on the basics - ignore the flash & wow stuff till such time as you can plunk down some change.

StMMT's suggestions are all very good BTW

I'm sorry, I should add that I have lots of experience winter camping but around London area (Scouts Canada for the win!).

I know what I need and have a list almost as tall as me of what I still have to buy. I was hoping someone from the area had a good idea of what worked. I've glanced at everything from Columbia soft shells, to MEC hard shells, to military cold weather gear.

I do like St. Micheals Medical Team's ideas. The system looks rather good. I just have limited money and would like to explore all my options and get some feedback on product. You can look at something on a website or store window for hours but until you've tried it, you'll never know what it's like. Hence me looking for help from you fine people.

sorry for the confusion guys...

Thanks geo and St. Micheals Medical Team for your feedback

MEC has an online gear swap on their website, full of decent used gear, and, although it won't do you any good for Feb, most stores also host a gear swap in the spring. Worth it if you can get near one of their locations.  I've picked up some amazing deals at them over the years, Zamberlan boots for $20, MSR Whisperlight Intl for $25, insultated shells for $40, things like that.  Many of the brands MEC carries are so well made and easy to maintain that even with years of use on them they've still got lots of life left in them.

I've also had good experiences with stuff from Taiga (in Vancouver, but they do mail order) ... generally bombproof (well, not literally!), and less expensive than MEC: www.taigaworks.ca
