It is with an extremely heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the news that my dear dad, David Roger Payne, passed away on September 29, 2026. Our hearts are broken, but we are so grateful for the love, wisdom, and wonderful memories he leaves behind.
David Roger Payne (David Payne) of Lansdowne, Ontario passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Brockville General Hospital on September 29, 2026, having been freed from his pain and long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancer, leaving behind a legacy of strength and love.
David was born in Peterborough to the late Mrs. Gladys Roberta Payne (Beavis) and the late Austin Kensington Wellington Payne on October 30th, 1943.
At just 17 years old, David joined the military with the Royal Canadian Regiment. His 26-year career with the Regular Forces included a 15-year NATO posting in Europe and deployment with the UN Peacekeeping Forces, followed by service at bases in London ON, Ipperwash, Petawawa, and Kingston. Following his retirement from the Regular Forces, he continued his dedication to service by joining the Brockville Rifles for an additional five years.
Upon his release from the military David volunteered his time to the communities in which he lived. He volunteered his time for Gananoque Minor and Junior hockey, Lansdowne Neighbourhood Watch, Gananoque Wheels of Care, Carveth Care Centre long-term care home and he also worked as a consultant at the Army Simulation Centre in Kingston for 14 years.
David was pre-deceased by his son Randy who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2006. He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy (National Silver Cross Mother) of 57 years, his son Chris and dear daughter-in-law Jo-Anne and cherished daughter-in-law Jody and partner Shane. Grandpa will be greatly missed by his loving grandchildren Tristan, Cameron (Justine), Jasmine (Jake) and Joshua. Great-Grandpa to Everett, Bennett, Tommy and Delilah. Also survived by sisters Sandra (Terry) Elinsky and Sheila (Charles, deceased) Edwards.
A remembrance service will not be held as cremation has taken place.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at the Palliative Care Team at the Brockville General Hospital. Also, a huge thank you to the caring staff from Bayshore Home Health in addition to the support provided through Ontario Health atHome.
In memory of David, donations would be appreciated to the Palliative Care Program through the Brockville & District Hospital Foundation.
