"RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A 90-year-old Army veteran who won the Medal of Honor during World War II is battling his neighborhood association for what he says is his right to fly the American flag from a pole in his front yard.":

:boring:

Of course, a headline reading "WWII Vet Told to Take Down Flagpole at His Home" gets a much more emotional response than "Homeowner defies Homeowners Association after Failing to have Flagpole Authorized."

Bring on the outrage that starts by ignoring the existence of rules or process.

While I agree with Mike about following the rules or processes in place, I believe there should be an element of respect Incorporated into these decisions, just as an officer pulling someone over with Veteran plates (Alberta anyways) for speeding might let him off with a warning compared to a ticket. If anyone has every had to deal with a homeowners association or condo board you know, some are impossible to convince of anything and determined to create a uniformed utopia where the status quo is always maintained. Should a 90 year old have to submit paper work, fees or stand before a committee ( I am just speculating as what needs to happen as per my experience) to place a flag on his property? Maybe, maybe not, I cant say whether this gentlemen is above the rules because he is a war vet with a Medal of Honour or not.  I just believe that sometimes in life you have to evaluate the situation and respond appropriately, which I don't believe was done in this case.
