You think 10km's is hard to run? Try 262 miles!

Ultramarathons are considered any distance of 50 km and more and include all types of endurance running comprised of either time, distance or both.  I did a 50 km race in Edmonton a couple of years ago.  One of the premier Canadian Ultra Marathoners is MWO Victor Hickey, RCR, presently stationed in Gagetown.  http://www.cfpsa.com/en/Archive/PSPStories/Sports/02_10_29_a_e.asp        Over the last couple of years several military members from the Edmonton area have participated in the Canadian Death Race in Grand Cache running 125 km with a 17000 foot elevation change and doing it in under 24 hours, the maximum time allotted to be considered a Solo Death Racer .  Last year saw Capt Richard Raymond from 1 CMBG complete it in 22:16:08 finishing 40th out of the 71 solo runners who completed it successfully.  Cpl Brian Hyland who was a last minute sign up, completed it at 23:45:30, just beating the cut off time.  Several others have run as members of  5 person relay teams representing various units.
The Canadian Death Race is held every August long weekend and the site is:

I've read about the Death Race before, quite amazing esp. in that heat.  Grand Cache is high but it is at the beginning of August!  For those interested in endurance races try some adventure racing.  It usually consists of some sort of boating (canoe/kayak), ropes course, running/trekking/orienteering and mountain biking.  You can choose between 4-6 hour races right up to many days such as Raid the North.  Will be doing my first 12 hour in June and looking forward to it.  They are alot of fun and especially shows how well you can perform as a team when everyone's tired and grumpy.

I believe this was just on dateline or Primetime or some show like that they other day.  A lady by the name of Pamela Reed has won this race twice.  Not just for the female side of things but over all.  She was doing real well this year but had to quit at the 90 mile mark because she started her monthly cycle while running.  Definitely amazing to watch that is for sure.

Yeah, Little Pammy, you are right.  It was on the CBS newsmagazine program 60 Minutes on this past Sunday night.  The show featured both Dean Karnazes and Pam Reed.  Pam Reed has won it several times and beat Dean by a margin of 30 minutes in the 2003 Badwater Ultramarathon in Death Valley, Ca.  She trains at night, while her kids are at soccer, after doing various household chores, and whenever she can averaging a run about about 5 times a day.  She is definitely an awesome athlete, and what's even more remarkable is that she is doing this in her 40's.
