You’re right politicians in Canada have lied. from all parties—CPC, LPC, NDP, etc have lied. But I’ve never in my many days on this planet witnessed anything like what Trump is doing to subvert democracy. If you see Trump as a freedom fighter for the American people despite his lies, then fine. Respectfully I don’t agree at all that other politicians here are just as bad. I see Trump using his lies to subvert Canada and other foreign governments. And for that reason, my opinion is that Trump is dangerous.

There are some larger scale greenhouses further north...especially in summer they actually become even more effective due to the longer days => more growing degree days.
The challenge is once it starts hitting -20 or colder...and they sure don't like the power bill at -40. There is at least one I know of in Timmons (tree nursery) that uses wood co-gen to offset heating costs while the one I think of in N. Alberta is Natural Gas. So seasonal production becomes more economical than year round like in the south.
But maybe a better question is...do we need fresh fruit and vegetables all the time? Growing up in the north you had berries/crab apples and some BC produce trucked north depending on season. Everything else was very limited options and/or quantities....and don't ask about prices. Canned and frozen goods were the common replacement for most side dishes. And the first garden harvests were always a nice mini-celebration compared to more canned beans.

Give me a break. Did you not read where I said I wasn't defending trump? Sure he lies, but he is also bombastic and aggravating. That's more than likely your cause of discomforture with him. I'd rather someone who we know is lying and exaggerating, you can dismiss that person as a bully and braggart. Or you can have our slimeball who beguiles Canadians with soft, moist talking and Oscar worthy performances as a washed out drama teacher who blubbers on command, but convinces weak minded citizens he's really looking after them.
You see trump's lies as subverting Canada. I can easily argue trudeau's as doing the same.

There was a time, when all we needed was a root cellar. (probably not lot of people here, know what that is
). Anyway, you wouldn’t have fresh fruit and veg until harvest season. Then you would gather it all up, can the fruit and soft foods and put it all, including your root veg, like spuds, carrots, beets, etc in the root cellar and live off of that until the next harvest.

Growing up greenhouses were common for basic vegetable gardens to gain the extra month of growing season needed. But it was always a "nice to have".
Then I saw what was happening in southern ontario and the industrial scale production that mostly was going to Hienz.

Huge volumes of fresh produce going straight to canned goods - usually - in high density production. No reason this couldn't be done in other portions of the country either (Vancouver, Medicine Hat, Annapolis Valley NB?) to help offset international imports.
I've also never looked at greenhouses the same since seeing those industrial scale ones.
There are also a number of First Nation related greenhouse projects underway, especially in BC, under various alternative power methods (Co-Gen, Geothermal, solar). Apparently it's a mix of provincial and federal initiatives around "Indigenous Food Security & Sovereignty (IFS) Grant"

Yes, we are blessed here in our tiny corner of Canada. The soil here was lake bottom at one time and exceedingly organic. Our climate is second to none. We are further south than many US states. If it’s not grown in greehouses, it’s grown on farms that are most of the county land. We have a number of vineyards and wine production, craft brewers, local meat and poultry producers. In urban areas, like Windsor, you find Canada’s auto capital, robotics manufacturers, the hub of Canadian tool and die shops and innovation. There's a lot packed into this little county. And yes, we even have real palm trees growing down here.
BTW, Highbury Canco (Hienz), only takes field tomatoes. They don't use any hothouse products.As an aside, our greenhouses are huge corporations with other greenhouse operations in Ohio, Alabama, California and Mexico.

I actually re-read your initial post several times before replying, knowing that you would probably take exception to what I said. Pretty much every member here admits that Trump lies and is a jerk. I’m not saying that you are a fan of his. And I’m definitely not a fan of Trudeau…or Jagmeet…or Harper…or Poilievre. Over the years I’ve switched my overall preferences from either the Conservatives (Red Tory PC) or the Liberals depending on the issues at the time and which leader and which party most aligns with my thinking. As I’ve said countless times over the past few years, the Liberals under Trudeau allowed huge numbers of people (including many criminals and potential terrorists) into the country, they allowed our military to degrade and also tolerated foreign interference. That is a damning indictment. And I’m not even going to get into deficit spending. So I’m not even attempting to defend him. Some of what he said was a lie and some was based on ignorance or incompetence. Mind you, I’ve said the same about both Poilievre and Harper. However…nothing any of our politicians have done comes even remotely close to what Trump is doing or saying.
If we make it past what Trump is trying to do to subvert us then I will get back to taking our own politicians to task for what they have done or are planning to do. Until that time comes I’m doing what I can to help unite this country.

As far as Trump is concerned, I'll wait for our new Conservative government and see if or how his rhetoric changes. Things are happening that his base isn't crazy about. He can, and does, change his tune at the drop of the hat. I expect we'll see some of that if PP becomes PM. He pushes and prods, makes outlandish statements and threatens and sees what sticks. He is not adverse to doing a 180. He's already moved on from annexing the whole of Canada to just southern Ontario. You just can't get wrapped around the axle about his boasts and bullshit. He expects and counts on that. I think these are just opening salvos for eventual proper trade negotiations. Minnesota, Ohio and New York haven’t got their new hydro bill yet. When they do, they'll be beating his door down. This is just the start and as long as the liberals hold power, you can expect his rhetoric won't change much.
Meanwhile the new PM was ramping up his own bullshit rhetoric, trying to scare and panic Canadians with his invasion by the US crap. Sticking with his lying, even with his first speech as PM. He has set the tone, during his runup and initial speech of lying to us at every opportunity. At least trudeau tried to hide it and fool us and it was a few years before a lot of Canadians realized what he was doing. Carney just stands up there and lies right to our faces and doesn’t care if you know he's lying or not. Just another bespectacled gnome of Brussels. Brookefield is going to be making a lot of money the next little while.

The proof is in the pudding, @fishbone. If Trudeau was trying to subvert Canada, he's done a really bad job. In 10 years he's been in power, the fabric of Canadian society has not fundamentally changed, and he hasn't amassed mountains of wealth or power. For all it's flaws and faults, the 10 years of LPC government and Trudeau leadership created numerous programs that are aimed at helping Canadians. Conversely, almost everything Trump is doing is having a negative effect on the American (and world) people and economies. You LITERALLY can't dismiss Trump as a braggart when he's doing as much damage as he's doing.

I like a drive in lumber yard and I tend to find Kent has those. But so does HH near my camp. And that HH also sells ammo.
But I am a Milwaukee man, so that can limit where I buy my power tools.
I spend lots at Princes Auto and Canadian Tire as well. I don't cook or grocery shop so I can't comment on that. The caveat there is my camp food tends to come from Giant Tiger, I guess that's the one place I do cook.
I've also been a big supporter of JDs Fishing and Hunting in Prospect, and Nova Tactical in Burnside.
