Trump administration 2024-2028

The Digital tax was always going to cause problems, it was heading to court under the USMCA anyway. That’s just an excuse, it seems Carney hit some other tripwire that Trump doesn’t like and it’s not Dairy either. Remember Trump rarely uses a computer, and seldom reads an email or briefing document. Everything is by phone or by text, so this is likely something some nut job friend of his put him up to.
Or - hear me out - there’s no real reason other than he doesn’t like us because we don’t like him. Elbows at ease.
Ummm.....EU defence deal anyone?

How would you handle negotiating with a bad faith, bullying, and beyond unpredictable interlocutor, other than handing over the keys and becoming the 51st state?

I wasn't elected on the premise that I would be best suited to handle negotiations with Trump. Would PP fair better, maybe, maybe not, guess we'll never know. I'm glad for Carney because if it wasn't for him, Trump would have already annexed us by now. Those B2's would be flying north not east. I can't wait for Trump to back down and cower once he realizes how tough Carney and his supporters are. Carney must have missed the day they taught what "non starter" means in business school.

So no ideas? Just more deflection? More shit-talking?

Do you think that’s an irritant? Honest question, why would he care unless we really are going to cancel the reminder of the F35, SPY6 etc. certainly Carney isn’t (and was never) going to join the ridiculous Golden Dome.

I suspect the big American defence contractors are making it a big deal in Washington. Canada is poised to spend billions on new kit, and by joining the EU programme, Canada is essentially saying we have little interest in spending those billions in America.

We are already committed to the SPY radars, and F-35s... The new money isn't committed yet, so America is flexing it's muscles to try to encourage us to spend down there.

That fact that Trump's lack of consistency is a key factor in our decision to shop elsewhere likely hasn't yet actually occurred to the administration.

We’ve committed to some F35 (16) and I believe so far only 3 SPY.
I think Carney is somehow going to cut the defence cord to the US. It’ll boost his image of “standing up”. The rules are being written and rewritten in real time so it’s anybody’s guess.

The Digital Services Tax is a dumb idea. Then Carney’s team informing the US trade team the tax is being applied retroactively was a really stupid move. Same with communicating that US vehicle traffic up/through Canada must be all electric by 2040. He’ll just close the border. These are two really dumb moves by Canada that for some reason are clearly put up to antagonize team Trump further beyond supply management.

Wasn't the retro already communicated?

Figuring out some way to tax these companies for business being done in Canada (and everywhere else they're drawing revenue from) seems worthwhile.

The OECD was working towards a global tax regime for DST and the US was/is onboard with that.
Canada imposing its own separate tax is jumping the gun a bit.

The US may have been negotiating before the election, but once the new administration was in place they weren't "onboard with that".

On 20 January, President Trump withdrew the US from the OECD Pillar 1 negotiations global digital tax reform negotiations.

TV and radio broadcasters next, I suppose.

Providers have already done the obvious and started applying advertising surcharges to cover the tax; more will join. The companies paying will be the advertisers.

In Canada, expenses for advertising can be deducted. I'm not aware of any tax on advertising (which would be kind of ridiculous while allowing expensing). The DST would make no sense applied inside Canada to Canadian advertisers using Canadian providers.

If someone were to analyze patterns of advertising taxation, I suspect we would see that a global tax regime is favoured by countries who expect to benefit from taxing sources outside their own countries. It can basically be seen as a component of trade war.

Governments that cannot manage their appetites for revenues continue to be desperate. Film at 11.

16 is a useless number of fighter jets i have to assume/hope that we get some sort of minimal sustainable amount

Why would Trump care about electric car mandates in 2040? Does he not like Tesla anymore?

We’re getting a spread of Canada/US trade talk across two threads- this one and the tariff thread. Mods, might help to consolidate the Canada/US trade talk into the latter?
