Some serious, serious money in harvesting 'sea cucumbers' (I'm like 99.5% sure they and Gooeyduck are the same thing?)

Like serious money. Fantastic business to be in if one can become one of the lucky few granted a license to harvest them each year...

Probably thought he just needed to harvest a few, and had a buyer lined up who thought they had a source of cheaper than market gooeyduck that they could then flip.

Obviously such an exclusive & profitable industry has their ways of making sure others don't trample on their revenue source.

Ya learn something new every day.

I just learned that Geoduck & Sea Cucumbers aren't actually the same thing...

---

Geoduck:
  • Pronunciation: "Gooey-duck".
  • Description: A very large saltwater clam, native to the northeastern Pacific Ocean.
  • Harvesting: Commercially harvested by scuba divers.
  • Culinary Use: Geoduck is known for its large, meaty siphon, which is a popular ingredient in various dishes.
Sea Cucumber:
  • Description: A marine animal, related to starfish and sea urchins.

  • Harvesting: Also harvested by scuba divers in commercial fisheries.

  • Culinary Use: Sea cucumbers are consumed after preparation, with both the skin and meat being used. They have a bland taste and are often used to absorb flavors from other ingredients.

  • Other Uses: In some cultures, sea cucumbers are used for medicinal purposes.
Similarities:
  • Both are harvested by divers in the same geographic region.
  • Both are considered delicacies in some culinary traditions.
Key Differences:
  • Geoducks are clams, while sea cucumbers are echinoderms.

  • Geoducks have a distinct, large siphon, while sea cucumbers are elongated and leathery.

  • Geoducks are typically prepared by slicing the siphon, while sea cucumbers are often blanched and sliced.

(Please forgive if y'all already knew the differences between the two. I did not.)
