CH-148 Cyclone Progress

Or an unfortunate junior ORO who happens to be available when the HEC violates COVID restrictions and gets flown home...
Is that the infamous Captain COVID, or another genius?

(My favourite nickname is still the Hamburgler, followed by Dr. Roundsman, but Captain COVID is more contemporary).

Ok ok what's the skinny on this???

No names, no pack drill.

Norfolk Naval base, early 2000s. A group of young sailors go out to Bar Norfolk to try and interact with the local female population and contribute to the local economy by way of purchasing libations.

The group, as per normal, is unsuccessful in interacting with the local female population so returns back to the ship in the wee hours of the morning.

There used to be a a McDonalds at the end of one of the jetty's in Norfolk on carrier row, not sure if its still there or not. One, in this group of young sailors, decides he wants some food.

So he breaks in to the McDonalds. Being a former employee of said company he knew how everything worked. Flashed everything up and had him self some growlies. Then he took off his clothes folded them neatly and passed out on trays of buns, after making sure everything was safe, shut down and cleaned up even the broken window.

He's brought back to the ship by USN shore patrol early in the AM. Who aren't even mad, all they can do is laugh. And then USN shore patrol returns at later that day with happy meals for him as a bit of continued jest.

He was charged for a window replacement and the food he ate. Thats it.

I am pretty sure that tale made it home before we did... And that was pre social media.
I think that was in 2008ish, and when I went back in 2016, was just chatting with a USN jetty security guy and he made a Hamburgler joke because I was Canadian so apparently he has become a bit of a legend in the world's largest Naval base.

I was on one of the other ships there at the time, and was a much funnier port visit then the previous Norfolk one, where one guy got jumped by a bunch of Brits from their carrier.

edit: just added 'he' to clarify the USN guy made the joke, which was hilarious, and got to fill him in on a few specific details he hadn't heard.

I'm amazed that every time I have heard this story over the years (and the first time I heard it was back in 2009), this little detail never gets missed.

SNMG1 HEC in second half of 2021? (well... for 2 months of that at least...)

Not sure, may have just been an air det pilot on FRE around that time. Got COVID twice during the deployment, after being left behind in whatever port they were in for 2 weeks after getting it the first time while not following the protocols (possibly at a strip club). Believe they were RTUd after the second time, which also meant a lot of the crew was quarantined again in the next port (from what I understand).

For understandable reasons, did not win hearts and minds of the crew, who were already subject to fairly strict restrictions.

I hesitate even to ask for a name…

Yep. That was him.

If we go down the replacement route, what about airbus? We could get them built in Fort Erie, would give us commonality with many of our European allies.
They only have the NH90 in that area, which has enough problems that I don't see it being an improvement over the Cyclone. The AW101 is used by just as many NATO allies, and we already have the SAR version in service.

I would love to see the Eurocpter Tiger built in Fort Erie, though.

That sounds about right to me. I would have been nearing the end of time on TOR.

I feel like that sailor was from TOR too no ? I don't remember much of the details around that one.

He actually folded them into the neat squares like they teach us at basic, what is it 12x12 or something like that ? lol.

So were you gone before NANOOK in '09?

You actually made me pull up my MPRR lol.

Ya, my last day on TOR was in July of '09. I was taken off as I was going on TF 1-10 and our work up training was starting that Sept in Meaford.

I was on TOR for the circumnavigation of Africa trip, with the Volcano, Shit Boat and the best CO a young sailor could ask for.

Ha! Then we were probably aboard at the same time, albeit for a few days. I was between my 3rd and 4th years of RMC and they sent me and 7 other snotties to Halifax for the summer; 4 of us on TOR and 4 on ATH. We ended up getting pawned around the fleet to whichever ships were sailing, but our "home base" was TOR between those sails. I think we arrived early June? Sailed on STJ, IRO, and all TOR sails that summer.

I think one of my best friends did that deployment to TG 1-10 with you; stoker from TOR. Blanchard? He was there for the Africa trip and the Volcano. I don't remember the shit boat story, but he had glowing things to say about your CO.
