A Deeply Fractured US

The "A Man for All Seasons" lesson: "And when the last law was down, and the Devil turned 'round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat?"
A personal fave of mine, too, that line. Careful what you want your team to do, just in case you may not be happy with what the other team does it, too.
One thing that ought to be emphasized when assessing the customary arguments and counter-arguments for gun control, especially for those framing restrictive proposals as "reasonable".

The weapon in question is a bolt-action rifle.
There you go, throwing nuance into the argument, blurring those harsh binary edges of the debate :)

In all seriousness, while gun control comes up as part of the churn around such events, given the weapon in question here, the bigger issue is the tolerance/rejection of violence as a solution to problems anybody feeling fucked over by the system experiences.

I'm comfortable with guns being reasonably controlled, but until radicalization (people feeling lost/helpless/screwed being convinced - converted? groomed? - that x + violence is the answer) of all kinds can be dealt with, you can have no guns at all in a society where people just, oh, I don't know, drive cars into groups of people they're pissed at, or stab them, or whatever.

Dealing with the tools makes some sense, but dealing with what gets people to the motivation and tipping point is both bigger and harder to fix.

Very little info, but active shooter reported at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, with reports of potential casualties. Also unconfirmed that the shooter is a former cadet who was kicked out but that’s not confirmed.

Aw man. More info now from local news. Sounds like:

  • Midshipman was kicked out of the U.S. Naval Academy
  • Former Midshipman communicates threats to USNA suggesting he was on the grounds and a threat.
  • USNA was locked down for active threat.
  • Police responded.
  • A current midshipman mistook responding police for the threat and attacked the responding police with a training weapon.
  • Current midshipman was shot and wounded by police and medevaced by helicopter.

Here are a couple examples of analysis of the Kirk killing. In one case some " experts" state that he was killed by a "supersonic bullet." Correct if I'm wrong, but most large calibre rounds will go "supersonic."

The other one is by a former SEAL sniper who gives his views on the assassination:

Edit: The CNN report mentions that " Culturally-related phrases were also scrawled on a rifle and ammunition." My understanding is that LEO are walking that back.

Just click bait. A .22 is supersonic. Generally you specifically have to make ammo with low enough pressures/speed to be subsonic (generally achieved by using a heavier than normal bullet with lower powder load). Saying the round is supersonic really doesn't say much as basically every rifle caliber today is supersonic. It would be something to note if it was subsonic.

Can someone tell me why this should not be the dumbest thing on the internet today? Am I missing something, or is this one of the dumbest takes ever? 🤦‍♂️

Dorothy asked the Scarecrow "if you don't have a brain how can you talk"

Scarecrow " I don't know. But some people without any brains do an awful lot of talking"

Replace "talking" with "typing" and that is the state of the net today

What’s insane about it? Dude flees and drops from the roof. About what you’d expect from a rooftop shooter in a permissive environment.
To be clear, I think the entire thing is insane, so having footage of the shooter escaping with low level parkour is well within the realm of internet insane.

We aren't all seasoned investigators with decades of investigative experience to make us jaded about surveillance footage.
