Our North - SSE Policy Update Megathread

Departments often don't do themselves favours. A cell tower was proposed near my place, public notices put out as required. I was curious what the signal strength and side lobes, etc would be. So I requested plans from the Department of communications (GCPE now) and specifically mentioned diagrams on antenna output. they sent me an email with dead links. Then I responded all their links were dead, then they sent me an email with the general arrangement drawing, then I had to email me them that I wanted antenna output. They responded they didn't have that information. I looked up the responder and got his number. Whereupon I called him much to his dismay and tore a strip off him for being completely unprofessional and making Fed PS look bad. I asked how can they review a cell tower without the complete plans and information. He could not answer that.
I was doing this out of curiosity, but someone told to believe cell signals are going to harm you, is going to believe this is government coverup, rather than just lazy effing useless turds.

We had often had the same problem with the MNR and MOE in Ontario. Often they would not respond to public complaints or inquiries into our impacts on the environment or internally labelling some complainants as nuisances (which some were of course). This did nothing to dispel the notion amongst the public that these ministries were not acting in the public industry

Good, they should be where people can see them. They need to know how the sausage is made. Also it makes posting people to the locations to maintain and protect the equipment easier, and shows the Canadian public what the CAF does. Living and working the communities. Enough with the bases in the middle of nowhere.

As far as good farmland, well perhaps you want to speak to Dougie Ford and his new highway instead, this site is a rounding error on farmland. I would be surprised if that was actually "good farmland". Its not Niagara or the Holland Marsh. It's fine farmland for specific crops (probably dairy or corn).
I will be doing a drive by on Saturday since I will be around the corner anyway and have probably driven by the site a few dozen times. Theres not a lot of acreage there so I dont know how much is actually needed. It backs onto the Minesing swamp. It should be good farmland assuming its tile drained and doesnt flood too bad. The soil should be very good. There were lots of plans to drain the swamp like the Holland but it proved too big to handle

I suspect a lot of these consultations, particularly with cel towers, are pro forma and they just aren't prepared for in-depth feedback. But I agree that a response like that is bad form. Surely the proposed tower wasn't unique and they could have pulled technical data from another one.
