I don’t think gun policy is front of mind for Carney at all- I don’t think he gives a rat’s ass, and has delegated the portfolio to someone else. While there may be continuity on that specific file, on the bigger economic and foreign policy stuff it’s tough to argue there’s not a major change in course by the new government.

In the Trudeau era, all the major gun control announcements were made by JT himself, surrounded by the usual assortment of victim groups and backstopped by an angry looking Bill Blair or seriously concerned looking Marco Mendicino. So far, the PMMC government's gun control announcements have all been made by ministers. I suspect that if there's another big announcement (e.g. full handgun ban or something similarly dramatic) it will be made by Carney himself, flanked by the usual suspects.

I think it's about to get a lot more distracting as details of how this is actually going to not work as advertised by his predecessor are starting to come out. I personally know folks who are looking at a loss of upwards of $50K if the money runs out before their submission is accepted by the program.

Maybe Carney kind of wants the gun control legislation (it keeps a certain voting base) but he seems to want to keep an arms length from the thick of it as it does piss off a lot of Canadians (let a minister take the hit).
I suspect Carney wants to be front and center on the international economic and security issues.

Yes.

I personally know people who owned collections that were worth multi-hundreds of thousands of dollars that have now been rendered valueless because they can neither sell them to anyone other than the government (maybe) at a price that the government will decide to pay, nor can they take them to the range and use them. To the best of my knowledge, those owners were not knocking off banks or shooting up Surrey, on their off time.
