The simple solution is to locate the daycare centres on the base proper, which practically speaking, allows you to eliminate anyone other than CAF members and DND employees…

Daycare isn't the only problem. My wife nearly quit her job to let me go on French in Ottawa. We couldn't find after-school care for our First Grader.

Even if daycare is on base, you need the ability for school buses to be able to drop off kids there.

I don’t know of any daycare that offers a school bus service. But it’s been a while since I had to deal with daycare.

Just make it a secondary duty. One quick DLN course on childcare and you're set.

Is that a requirement or a choice? There is a lot if provincial legislation and regulation that the department chooses to follow but is not obliged to follow.

I am not saying it is impossible. What I am saying is that it requires dedicated staff work with 10 provinces and probably a couple of territories and a bunch of issues cannot just be hand-waved away.

It’s a matter of will to make a solution happen. Not saying it is easy or instant, I suspect it would actually be quite difficult.

Everyone is happy sticking their heads in the sand and pretending there isn’t a problem. We have done it so long that it is now reaching critical levels. This applies to all levels of society (the trades, health care, housing, child care, etc.).

Child care is critical for the CAF to be successful. Your troops can’t fight or do anything effectively if they are worried about their child. Either we address it or we keep losing troops who chose their family over their career.

If the private sector isn’t able to provide a solution the government shall have to.

I didn't know school boards provided transportation for pre-JK, particularly if they require a car seat (under 40lb.)

They don't as far as I know although there are a couple of local daycares that over van service that I have seen in burlington. But please, follow the string. The bus comment was in reply to Remius and transportation for his first grader

some schools have after school programs in house, I know my kids school has that until 6pm

Alternately, DND set-up its own governance & oversight system to operate and administer a daycare system completely outside regulation by the provinces (and the provinces don't get a vote). There was daycare, public school, and healthcare administered by DND for CAF dependants in the CFE days without a province to oversee it all. I am not saying that is the right thing to do within Canada today. I am just saying it is not true that DND is limited only to operating daycare centres under provincial control.

What you are saying is true, except that CFE was an outlier- being outside Canada and all.

I think the provinces would object because federally employed ECEs would get pay and benefits far beyond private industry.
Hopefully the hiring process would ensure all the best ones are poached.

Then bases become enclosed systems, no problem, enough housing on bases for all, plus child care, and primary school within walking distance of housing area.
