Your mistaking the intent behind our firearms laws. It is designed to make it difficult and slowly but surely remove them from society. The designers of said laws made it very clear that was the goal.

The government likes it not being written in, theoretically allows them to do things they wouldn’t otherwise.

That being said, I would argue that property rights are a ‘pre-1867’ right and the fact it is written into the Canadian Bill of Rights reinforces that argument. Clearly it is a recognized right even if they refuse to formalize it.

IIRC, it was the provinces that didn’t want property rights included in the Charter. Mind, I don’t recall the feds putting up any fight to secure these rights either.

I did a pretty deep dive using copilot on this, trying to find if there would be any legal arguments that had a chance of success. While there are potential arguments that would be successful in gaining appropriate compensation for any prohibited weapons, without an amendment to the OIC no legal path exists to keep prohibited firearms under current law (which there is a 95% probability the SCC would uphold under both charter and common law challenges).

Last I saw was 32K firearms registered for compensation. That just means that the 32K guns will be paid in full, and everybody else with get nothing for the privilege of destroying/handing in their firearms.

After the last shooting, there is pretty much zero chance of an amnesty extension, or a walk back of the bans.

That's probably not a true figure. I and friends of mine registered in order to see what firearms they had identified us with. You have to register in order to see the prefilled form and what they have on you. That doesn’t mean we will follow through and identify other firearms for them. In my case they showed four firearms in my possession. That will be all they get in October. I'll take no blood money for my personal, stolen by the government, property.

Totally fair, and there are likely quite a few others who did that too. That said, there are likely also lots of people who aren't that fussed about the whole thing, and just want to make a buck back for their now illegal property.

The terminally online, deep into the firearms fight crowd, is a small portion of the overall number of owners.

I just got an email from a friend who wants to send a rifle off to be consigned for sale....he wanted some advice and here's what I sent him:

Here’s the thing about your VZ – it’s prohibited. You cannot sell it. Same as your AR. They are unsellable within Canada, and you are unlikely to be able to secure an export permit for it as an individual.

The good news is that you are currently covered by the Amnesty which is in place until 30 Oct 26.

Your options are:

1. Sign up for the ‘Buyback’ program and hope that they’ll give you some money for them.
   1. (So far, no-one has received any money for their guns which have been registered for the buy-back, and the $$ offered for most guns under the buy back seems to be pennies on the dollar.)
2. Do nothing – wait until 30 Oct and the Amnesty expires to do anything. With the current low rate of compliance, it is unlikely that the GOC will have any option but to extend the amnesty.
3. If the amnesty is not extended, you can still legally possess the firearms (VZ and AR) until 30 Oct, at which point you must either surrender them to the police, or, you can disassemble and destroy them, reporting the destruction to the police/CFO under section 106/107 of the firearms act.

I have several firearms which are in the same position.

In the meantime, you cannot consign, sell, or leave your house with those firearms.

It’s illegal to use or shoot them.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

The 'normalized' number for Alberta should consider the much higher rate of ownership that's likely happening there....there's a guy who did a youtube breakdown assessing his estimated participation and it's an average of 1 person in 75 in Canada that's got a firearms license that has registered a firearm for the compensation program.
