CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

Confirmed by Charest. A reminder that the digital services tax was scrapped 9 months ago and didn't result in any progress.

Washington demanding 'entry fee' from Ottawa before trade talks: sources

"[U.S. President Donald] Trump wants us to make a lot of concessions before we sit down at the table," Charest told Radio-Canada. "Meanwhile, he wouldn’t make any."

On the U.S. side, there are suggestions that Canada should try to get Trump’s attention by making an immediate concession, especially since the president is juggling several major issues right now.

However, Canadian sources said they have twice offered concessions to the U.S. administration without receiving anything in return.

Aw come on guys, he's so busy give him a break!

US trade Representatives have said the quiet part out loud.

They cannot leave CUSMA without Congress because CUSMA is a act of Congress and the president and his Mafia thugs masquerading as a government cannot unilaterally leave.

Wait them out. Go through all the motions, smile and nod if you must, but don't give up an inch and wait for sane leadership in the White house again. Once a Democrat or sane Republican is in office, sign a 50 year deal that cannot be ripped up, and then spend that time diversifying the hell out of our trade landscape.

All trump and co can do right now is Huff and Puff for 10 years until CUSMA officially expires. We have time.

Don't even need to go that far, after the mid terms, Trump will be sweating for a win to get a likely Democrat controlled congress off his back

Mm hm. CUSMA remains in effect. We’ve seen Trump shy away from violating it time and again with his tariff announcements; he knows that’s a legal loss for him. This is a review; it’s not an expiration. Just keep tagging the puck. Midterms are seven months out and it’s not looking great for Trump thus far. He suffered a major loss at SCOTUS on his national security tariffs, he’s mired America in yet another unpopular foreign quagmire, inflation is picking up and starting to bite… No need for us to offer him freebies.

And meanwhile keep anggressively expanding our trade relationships with everyone else.

Unless he decides, in a fit of who-knows-what-set-him-off-this-time, to unilaterally pull out, with all the attendant court & other appeal processes.

A few things.

One. If he needs a win, don't give him one.

Two. Don't trust any deal you make with him.

Three. If a deal has to be struck, zero concessions. None. They brought this on themselves. Canada can literally wait until another administration is in place.

My point exactly, they will be desperate, they already lost the tariff ruling which was a win for us. We lose nothing by denying them a quick victory

You have way more faith in clean, speedy judicial and appeal processes than I do :)
I have more faith in the business and moneyed class raising hell and using their financial privilege to get to the powers that be on the judicial branches to save their wealth that relies on the entire North American economy not suddenly plunging into recession

There are no deals that can't be ripped up, but as with everything else we could or might do, waiting out Trump is the best CoA.

Yep. PMMC was asked about it earlier in the morning.
