Just breaking minutes ago. Looks like a shooting took place outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Security rushed Trump out. Doesn’t seem like it was in the actual event hall.

Video with what sounds like one ‘deep’ gun shot and four fast ones. Could be consistent with a shooter getting one off and being lit up. Trump gets rushed out by security.

Waiting to firm up but apprently TV news is saying there’s info a shooter was shot and stopped at the venue.

Usual rule applies. Assume most info is BS until corroborated, including mine.

So, with some more firm info now:

  • The high security for the event started outside the ballroom, not outside the hotel.
  • Male suspect acquired/assembled a shotgun outside the secure zone and essentially ran the magnetometer checkpoint. I’ve seen the purported security video and he basically bolted through at a full sprint; dude was flying. He had a shotgun, handgun, and knives
  • Shots were fired. An officer was struck in the vest, currently in hospital but apparently doing well.
  • Not confirmed if the suspect actually fired any rounds (my note- if a guy’s running into that event with a long gun, absolutely to be expected cops would shoot at him whether he fired or not).
  • Not 100% clear if the attacker was shot, but press conference is saying no. He ended up on the ground under multiple cops and photos of him in custody show him apparently conscious and alert. (My note- I wonder if someone simply say him sprinting in and tackled him).
  • Shooter’s been tentatively IDed. Info’s out there but I’m not gonna repeat it due to how often these turn out inaccurate.
  • No word yet on motive or who was actually the target.
  • The dinner was cancelled. Trump subsequently gave a press conference offering a lot of this info and showing photos of the shooter in custody.

So yeah, that’s the sketchy info as of tonight. They’ll be trying to interview the suspect while investigators find every bit of his online presence they can and start identifying friends and associates. Obviously they want to know the why, and if anyone else is involved.

I saw the video of the guy sprinting past the Secret Service's 'cheesecloth' cordon, where one of the cordon team jumped out of his way to let him pass...

I'm going with 'low security' ;)

Apparently he was checked in as a guest at the hotel.

Room service observations in 3,2,1 ….

His drunk posts tricked me again... :(

I was participating in training an agency's Close Protection Officers as OPFOR...one group had their principal in a full on surrounded shield until one of the DS yelled "GUN"...and everyone hit the ground...well everyone except the principal standing there with a gunman who got six close range shots off with their pistol into the client...I was a gunman for one scenario - 2 CPO's were watching my hands as I shook the prinicipal's - as soon as their heads turned away to other people, I yanked the revolver out with the other one, got two shots off into the top of the nice man's head before the team almost broke my arm...

Long story short - if someone REALLY wants to harm the person being protected, they have much better than even odds of doing it. I've also been on the opposite side in CPO training - you can be as diligent as you like, but you have to be lucky every single time, where as the baddy only needs to be once.

Now, about having a ballroom on WH grounds behind the WH property line...
Agreed.

In such an arrangement, one probably would not be able to steal the table wine and drink it afterwards while commiserating ….

It's good to take a light-hearted view.

Across the line, Trump supporters are poring over and re-publishing every instance they can find of a Democratic politician or supporter or presumed-to-be-supporter who publicly advocated some kind of "resistance" or "you'll be sorry" or "any means necessary" or "assassination porn" rhetoric; I suppose they (Trump supporters) find it to be a usefully calming therapy.

Imagine what would have happened if a person who knew what they were doing had performed this attack.
Depends on the objective of attack.

Depending on the nature of the threat, there’s always gonna be a first point of detection.

Someone walking down the street towards the hotel with a rifle? Likely seen and dropped by cops outside.

Enter the hotel with normal looking luggage then pull a long gun from it? Probably stopped right there.

Walk in with a concealed pistol? Probably be fine in the public non-screened areas unless you’re flagging and someone sharp-eyed sees it. That’s what the magnetometer checkpoint is for.

In this case he ducked into a utility space, assembled a shotgun there and then ran at a dead sprint through the magnetometer checkpoint. He was engaged on running through. There was a different floor, a set of stairs, and a lot of cops between that initial checkpoint and the event space. Doesn’t look like he made it anywhere close in threat terms. As soon as his (extremely) anomalous behaviour was visible, he got stopped within seconds are still nowhere meaningfully close to the targets. Looks like he was probably shot at and missed, and I guess someone probably got him by going hands on. The inner security area would be pretty high-density with police.

I’m seeing some shit takes that security didn’t work. I don’t see that. There are always layers, and different types of threat and behaviour will have different levels of success against different layers. The layers of cordon and standoff appeared to have worked.

Wild that he wasn’t shot, but things play out funny sometimes.
