Number of U.S. Troop Deaths in Iran War Appears Lower on Pentagon Website

Three military officials and a Pentagon spokesman gave conflicting explanations for why the number of Americans killed in the Iran war had changed.

On Wednesday, the Pentagon reported on its casualties website that a total of 18 American service members had been killed during the war in Iran.

By Thursday, the Defense Department had lowered that number, reporting that 14 American troops had been killed in the war.

Three military officials said that one reason behind the change was that the Trump administration decided to remove four service members killed this past weekend from the list — three in Jordan and one in northern Iraq — because their deaths occurred after President Trump declared a cease-fire in the war in April.

The officials described sensitive internal discussions on the condition of anonymity.

The acting press secretary for the Pentagon, Joel Valdez, attributed the change instead to “temporary data disruptions” on the website that he suggested would be quickly fixed.

After Google fined €890m by EU, US president said Europe was ‘robbing’ American companies and taxpayers

Donald Trump has threatened the European Union with additional and “substantial” tariffs after Brussels imposed a series of steep fines on US tech giants.

The US president accused Brussels of taking “direct aim” at several American companies including Apple, Meta Platforms, Amazon and Google, writing in a Truth Social post: “The United States of America is not a ‘PIGGYBANK’ for Europe, nor will we allow it to be!”

Days earlier, Google was fined €890m ($1bn) by the EU after its search and app store services were found to have breached online competition laws. Last year Apple and Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, were also fined.

Trump claimed in his social media post on Friday that the US would “immediately” launch an investigation into the EU’s practice of “‘ROBBING’ American Companies and, in turn, the American Taxpayer,” and said that the EU will “pay a very big price” for its actions.

It came just a day after the Trump administration separately imposed a sweeping round of tariffs on more than 80 countries, including those in the EU.
