CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

This. If it’s not signed by US Congress, it’s not an agreement worth anything.
Yup.

It's a trap.

Trump will get his concessions, and then do the same damn thing 3-6 months down the line.

Canadians will be furious, not just at trump, but at carney for being played for a fool.

The only winning move is not to play.

Now G&M is reporting on this red line.

I still hope and pray we do not get a deal.

I still hope and pray we do not get a deal.
That is just plain crazy talk.
Why would you say something that short sighted.
If you said 'I still hope and pray we do not get a bad deal that screws us for the next 20yrs', that would be ok, but to just say it the way you is just stupid.
Whatever 'deal' we sign off on is NOT related to CUSMA and will not be approved by Congress. Once Trump is gone, the agreement could be ripped up.

A fair deal should definitely be the objective and we should not refuse one out of spite.
A fair deal....

Okay, we give up concessions on dairy quotas and the like.

Trump signs a ART with us.

6 months later he puts a whole new bunch of tariffs on us, because ARTs are not ratified by congress and be be changed by him on a whim.

What do we do? Undo the concessions?

It's a bloody trap.

Any deal with trump that isn't a free trade deal ratified by congress is by definition not a fair deal.

Trump can and will change it on a whim, after we have already made concessions, seeking more concessions.

We get a deal, a ART like trump loves to sign, and we are at his mercy as he starts to boil the lobster.

Anything related to CUSMA is dealt with under CUSMA.

The booze ban and other tariffs we put in place were to counter their new tariffs. We scrap these and they scrap those.

Beyond that, again, what's in CUSMA stays in CUSMA - and it goes through Congress.

And this tariff deal will be outside of CUSMA.

It will be us giving up concessions (which may then be expected in CUSMA talks down the line) to get a reduced tariff rate.

This wont go to congress, it wont be ratified, it just executive power that sets the rates, aka, a ART, not a FTA.

So when trump goes back to the well 6 months from now with new tariffs asking for more concessions, what then? We will have already agreed to concessions earlier.

It's like when Churchill* asked a woman how much for a night, and she balked when the price dropped, asking what kind of woman he thought she was. Churchill said what kind of woman she was had already been established, and now they were just haggling over price.

We give in to this blatant extortion attempt, and we position ourselves as a nation who simply rolls over and takes whatever unjust ART he decides on, and if it happens again, we will roll over again.

Let the 19th pass, and suspend trade talks. Sure it may hurt but at least we dont give into these bully tactics. If we give up the lunch money now, they will come for it again next week.

*Widely attributed to Churchill anyways.

Dude, we are the ONLY country that has established itself as the one and only that was and is willing to tell Trump to f8ck off. What other country's leaders has he said are 'nasty' to negotiate with us? Answer none.

IF Trump is stupid enough to try and f*ck us in 6 months with new tariffs, we put tariffs back in place against them again.

I don't know which is more painful to listen to - the individuals on here that think the sun rises and sets on PP and that if he was PM now the Heavens would open and all the Heavenly Hosts would be signing 'Glory to God and to Canada in the Highest' - or you and your constant whining about Trump/Americans and how evil they all are.

The world is not 'Black' and 'White' - there are many many shades of Black, White, Grey and everything else that could be possible. Each issue/item should be treated individually and singularly, not painted with the same brush stroke time and again.

Again, we are setting a precedent.

We accept reduced tariffs for an ART.

Suddenly thats the baseline for CUSMA negotiations.

And the logic from the american side is actually pretty clear. If we accepted tariffs for a ART, why not an FTA?

We should stand on principle. We have a FTA. There should be NO TARIFFs. And it prevents the entire obvious trap that is being laid before us. We agree to this, they reneg. Trump has reneged on Iran, on Europe and the UK deals. He will do the same with us, without a doubt.

And then what? Take the booze off the shelves again? Put them back with a new deal? Take them off again? At what point does that just give the americans what they want instead of being a pressure tactic?

No thank you. Let the 19th pass on by and flip them the bird.
