Look at the negative response it has generated here. I'm sure it would be similar with the wider public as well. If the tactic wasn't effective I don't imagine they would keep doing it.

As noted above, the CBSA union provides swag such as slip-ons. CBSA recruits used to wear red slip-ons which were similar to the protest ones. Crossing the border in 2015 at Lacolle with my wife, she asked me why CBSA had recruits working the front line.
CBSA recruits now wear grey slip-ons.

Speaking from a customer service point of view, some might say a customer should be satisfied that you simply show up at their door when called.
In that case dress and grooming standards are meaningless.
Personally, I felt when crossing the threshold into a customer's home, they liked the clean cut look. Smile and a shoeshine.
You only have one chance to make a good first impression .

The former CWO in me has a hard time with union swag. Some members of my team wear it. I won't. Nobody gives me grief over it, either.

I think any military, or former military member , must cringe when they see that.
I'm a Border Security fan. I think that does more to highlight the importance of Public Safety professions than goofy swag.

I work in a world of professional virtue signalers, many of whom wear various types of badge, patch or doo dad to show their solidarity with various causes they know little about in the hopes that others will see them as 'allies' of one kind or another, and maybe even hire them for some work.
I was once asked why I wasn't wearing the 'virtue signaling patch of the day', whatever it was, and replied "The only thing I ever wear is a poppy."

This discussion reminds me of a book I read about the 1973 FDNY Firefighter’s Strike.
Union brothers turned against each other as some voted to strike , while others crossed the picket lines and manned the engines.
It showed the terrible toll this political event took on the city and the personnel of the New York City Fire Department.
Very thankful we never went on strike.

The back of my right shoulder is in one episode of the Canadian version and the back of my head is in one of our recruiting ads. They insisted on only showing my good side.

Quebec man's ticket tossed because cop wore camouflage
Quebec is considering a special law to force police to wear proper pants, after a judge threw out a man’s fine because he did not believe a woman wearing camouflage was an officer.

I mean, it’s a bit of a challenging position to be in. IMO public safety professions ought not have the right to strike; the risks of us not being on the job are too high. At the same time, in Canada we still have the right to unionize and to collectively bargain.
The collective withdrawal of labour is the ultimate last ditch pressure tactic my a union against an employer when they can’t get a deal. We don’t have recourse to that. So where is the balance in terms of pressure tactics we should be able to access when bargaining isn’t working? There’s work to rule obviously, though that has impacts on the public as well. Uniform modifications can signal discontent and gain a bit of awareness without tangibly affecting operations unless taken to extreme.
Most of our unions have binding arbitration as a ‘last step’ in a labour dispute, but that’s slow as hell and usually sticks to straight pay and comp issues.
So yeah, the tensions between labour and employer in the public sector safety professions is tricky. Labour can’t strike, the employer doesn’t have the same economic imperatives and pressures a business would, and the views of the public tend to be pretty polarized. I don’t see that there is any ideal solution to this.

The solution of our union was to go on strike, but leave us on the job.
They threatened to use us as their "Atomic bomb", but , thankfully, it never came to that.
In May 1972 they went on strike. I joined in September of that year, and benefitted from the 18% raise and other improvements they won without ever having to walk a picket line or go on strike pay.
Probably more importantly, maintaining the goodwill of the taxpayers. They took out their wrath on the garbage men who actually fought our battle.
They made it up on OT cleaning up the mess they created.
