This...we ended up having to give them fuel and food out of our reserve because they didn't have any spare for when our resupply routes got blockaded. Oh, and we had to help them demine their patrol routes...even if they never left their patrol bases.

The UN has finally acknowledged it played a role in an outbreak of cholera in Haiti in 2010 that has since killed about 10,000 people in the country.

Scientific studies have shown that Nepalese UN troops were the source of the disease - but the UN repeatedly denied responsibility until now.
An internal report seen by the New York Times is said to have led to the shift.

But the UN still says it is protected by diplomatic immunity from claims for compensation from victims' families.

Kenya isn’t a former French colony. French isn’t going to be a common language.

Bright side, most people largely speak Creole...and most of the UN countries that showed up in 2004 were largely Spanish or Portugese speaking. MIF troops in 2004 were from Canada, France, Chile and USA - the Canadians were from Quebec and New Brunswick, so no "proper" French speakers there .

Back story to this is El Salvador had some technicians in Country assisting UN Gang Task Force who were ambushed and kidnapped by Haitian. The President of El Salvador, who is a hawk, has launched a military operation to rescue the four El Salvadorans killed and has vowed to destroy the gangs if the personnel are harmed.

El Salvadoran Special Forces were inserted yesterday in to Haiti via US C130s and C17s. The US is providing transportation and logistics, El Salvador is providing the muscle.

I am of the same view.

A lot of external players disapprove of Bukele's methods but he was elected on an anticrime mandate and he has widespread popularity in El Salvador itself. The results seem to speak for themselves:

The gangs can surrender their weapons. The gangs can leave Haiti and venture to Russia or Africa to join the Russian mercenaries there in any one of a half dozen countries. Or the gang members can die. Thee is no other choices available that would allow Haiti to become a successful member of society. I don't know how many of you actually got in country when Canada deployed to help in Mali but if anything, Haiti is worse although not by a lot. They are both cesspools. Been to both. You don't go anywhere by yourself and without an armed guard

Four bodies believed to be those of Salvadoran soldiers who went missing after being deployed to Haiti on an international mission to crack down on gangs were found on Saturday, according to two people close to the mission.

The discovery comes just days after El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, sent hundreds of special forces members to Haiti to try to recover the men. Mr. Bukele had threatened to finish the gangs off if the men were not returned alive.

The local news media reported that the Salvadorans were killed and then burned by Chen Mechan and 400 Mawozo, gangs that operate in that area, on the northern outskirts of the capital.
The men were aviation technicians who handled transport and medical evacuations for the Gang Suppression Force.
The Salvadoran contingent is made up of pilots and technical personnel whose primary jobs are to carry out medical evacuations and save lives, “not to wage war,” Mr. Bukele said Wednesday in a social media post.

I wonder if these gangs are about to receive a very large dose of "find out".
