Manitoba Majority Government, 2023-?

They do. I don't recall it even being a big issue during their election. Maybe politics are moving past stuff 20 years in the past.
The Provincial Conservatives got desperate in the last week or so and went after him on that stuff. I don’t think it helped their cause and may have had the opposite effect they were aiming for.

You are right in that regard. People can change for the better and that backfired on them.

It also helped that Team Orange stepped out from the very start about the history to get it on the table and out of the way.

Here's another - the searching of the landfills filled everyone's heart with sadness and anger at the evil Heather and her gang.

NOW I expect all those who pushed for the search to willingly VOLUNTEER without recompense to search the landfills. Unions, citizens and large corporations that all pressed for that get out there and do it.

:ROFLMAO: An NDP government? Asking workers to work for free? Voluntarily?

I thought you were a Manitoban. Oh wait. We still don't have a sarcasm emoji do we?

;)

So, this made me curious. Usually when we see a tightly cropped clip of a politician saying something inflammatory it ends up being edited to strip context. Sure enough that’s the case here.

AI disclosure- I fired the quote into Claude and asked it to find me the source, date, and context, but then I read the transcript myself.

The MLA in question is speaking to a private member’s bill that would substantially limit civil liability for, effectively, those who harm suspects engaged in trespassing. The MLA is a former teacher and was noting how many younger kids do really stupid things either in theft or as pranks. The “if they want to steal, let them steal” was a specific and direct reference to the common retail store policy against physically apprehending shoplifters due to the risk of injury. The brief clip presented is from this longer quote:

“I don't think anyone's property is more valuable than a human life. That's why we have insurance. That's why we buy insurance for our property. That's why it's so important that we not put ourselves in the line of fire when something's being stolen.

You know, we tell people who work in retail, someone comes in, they want to steal, let them steal. It's not worth your life. We've seen what happens when people don't do that. I think about the grocery store clerk many, many years ago on Arlington avenue. He's trying to, you know, go after a shoplifter and ends up dying. It's just not worth it.”

Her longer full statement is in Hansard, she was the first speaker that session: 3rd Session - 43rd Legislature, Vol. 77a, Oct 29, 2026

Lots to debate in her longer statement, but I don’t think the selective editing by the opposition was promoted remotely fairly. Whoever edited and put out the video is being disingenuous. It’s unfortunate that we live in an era now where out political representatives can’t debate things frankly without having to worry that a four second clip will be selectively edited. Still lots of contentious stuff to debate, but for me personally the shock value disappeared with added context.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting any ill intent in your further sharing of it. I think that’s just exactly what they were seeking; push the sound byte knowing that in most cases, the audience isn’t going to have the down time to look further.

Funny enough this ties back in to the latter half of one of my replies in the ‘police behaving badly’ thread the other day about public expectations around petty theft.

Are you suggesting that the post is inaccurate? If so, could you kindly point out the inaccuracies? Are you saying that it doesn't accurately reflect what she said, or that you disagree with either the statements made by the NDP MLA or the Manitoba PC Party's decision to post them?

I think we've established in other threads that we view the world through very different lenses and have distinctly different political leanings and biases.

That said, I don't see how any context could justify an elected official making those particular statements. I'm genuinely interested in understanding which part you disagree with: the accuracy of the post itself, the statements being made, or the decision to share them.

Also the whole clip is over 2 mins in length.
