    CFAT Rewrite process

Allista, Why don't you join an infantry reserve unit (assuming there's one in your community), get some experience as an infanteer, put in a lot of extra time, and then component transfer. It'll give you a sense of what the trade is like and most reserve units are looking for recruits.

Canada does not need fighter jets, period - G&M

But then you get fighter pilots who say the opposite. It's almost impossible to get a clear picture of this airplane's true capabilities. http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/03/06/f-35-design-problems-make-night-flying-impossible-increase-risk-of-being-shot-down-u-s-pilots-warn/ Link removed...

    F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF)

No that would be the Su 35, don't think it's in the running  :)

    F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF)

Good points, particularly Eye. There may be financial spin offs, theoretically. But let's be hard-headed in this sense: the F35 isn't politically sustainable. If the Tories can't get behind the F35 then who can? I can easily imagine Justin Trudeau taking a page out of Jean Chretien's playbook...

    Iranian Ghadir Class Mini Submarines

This is question for our naval warfare SMEs: I've been reading about Iran's Ghadir class mini-subs and I'm wondering how capable they really are? Apparently they are based on a North Korean design. I assume they would be difficult to detect in the shallow waters of the Straits of Hormuz (with...

    Counterinsurgency/COIN Literature & Discussion (merged)

An excellent piece, thanks for posting the link.  I especially liked the reference to  T.E. Lawrence  and how he would be perceived today as a lecturing military authority.

Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT) [MERGED]

try this site, might help... http://www.onlinemathlearning.com/algebra-word-problems.html If you're not sure you are ready for the math, then you might want to wait until you are totally confident -- take a formal course or find a tutor.  I wouldn't relax about it. good luck

AEC Officer (what happens if you wash out of training)

If you already have a degree wouldn't they give you a waiver on the CFAT if you wanted to go NCM?

Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT) [MERGED]

Azizti, If you're unsure about your math skills then you might want to put off writing the CFAT and practice until you're confident you can succeed.  If you write and don't make the minimum score for the trade you're interested in, it's not only unpleasant personally but potentially career...

Why does Haig get the shaft?

There have been several attempts to rehabilitate Haig's reputation in recent years. I think John Keegan's observations are apt: "The energies expended in such reconsiderations seems, to this author at any rate, a pointless waste. The simple truth of 1914-18 trench warfare is that the massing of...

WW2-era IJN superbattleship MUSASHI to be salvaged

I agree. I think the ROV idea would make an excellent documentary along the lines of Ballard's work. Why disturb a war grave? Besides that - although I'm hardly an expert - I'm not sure how you would successfully raise a ship that size without running the danger of having it break apart. It...

WW2-era IJN superbattleship MUSASHI to be salvaged

Wow 4,400 feet! I can't imagine how much money that would cost. IIRC the CIA spent millions trying to raise a Soviet sub back during the cold war. This would be true feat of engineering if they could pull it off.

    Age Limits to Join

Expat Mike, Don't forget Public Affairs Officer (PAO) as a possible choice too. I don't know if you've had any experience with media, but if you do, your background might be a very good fit for PAO. Have a look at this recruiting link below and click on the media video - it's a bit dated but...

    Age Limits to Join

Ex-Pat Mike, Keep in mind that you're going to start at the very bottom as a junior officer.  That's okay when you're in your early 20s - it's a lot less okay when you're heading toward 40 and you've presumably established yourself in a civilian career with solid experience and a highly...
