CAN-USA Tariff Strife (split from various pol threads)

What could possibly go wrong?

I think the democrats may have finally realized the republicans have such a slim hold on the House now that the GOP cannot afford for even one seat to vote with the democrats, three voted with them here.

SCOTUS should be feeling the fire under them now to get that ruling out.

The tariff resolution, introduced by Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., will be considered a day after a procedural vote on a rule that would have barred House challenges to Trump’s tariffs failed with the support of three Republican members.

He’s whining about how hard we are to deal with again. I guess we should have signed one of those garbage deals he scribbles on toilet paper and then wipes with when something hurts his feelings a few months later.

Good job Jivani, between this and the bridge Canada is sure feeling his "love".

Wow. Talk about “loser energy”…

It’s probably baffling to him and his administration that we have yet to bend the knee like everyone else.
I think *members of his staff know exactly why Canada is in no rush to ‘deal a deal’ with the U.S. - SCOTUS decision still not issued, USMCA negotiations not yet formally kicked off, any number of behind-the-scenes whispering campaigns to make issues out of non-issues.…the list goes on. A principle of negotiation is don’t commence negotiations until it’s time to negotiate.

Detroit Auto Rep Warns Carney That China EV Plan Risks US Trade

Kingston pointed to Mexico’s decision to raise tariffs on Chinese cars and other goods to as high as 50%, saying it has resulted in more progress in negotiations over tariffs and trade issues.

Where did having a 100% tariff on them get us, exactly?

“There’s no such thing as diversifying away from America,” he said. “So we will get an agreement and there will be an industry that continues to be integrated.”

Ah, just another CEO wanting to live in their own reality. The Trump admin has made it very clear they do not want to share that industry with us anymore.

Indeed. We played ball and got the bat shoved up our ass. Duly noted.

When my next vehicle purchase comes, which will probably be a three row family vehicle pretty soon, I will absolutely be putting some effort into to understanding the geography of the supply chain of anything I’m considering. I will spend a bit of time looking into how the various manufacturers in play have approached this subject.

In the 1990’s, the US Big 3 had 70% of the CDN market share. By 2005 it was 50%. Last year the had 36.5% of the Canadian market.
You can see clearly the trend.
Chrysler (Stellantis) is down to 6% market share in Canada….

My new car has a blue oval on it (god help me) but it came from a factory in Mexico. No idea where it came from before that!

Air Canada sees surging overseas corporate travel following U.S. trade tensions

This is a very good thing - it means that the Corporate world is not sitting on their hands in the corner rocking back and forth mumbling that the 'sky is falling', they are out there doing what they should be doing - hustling and making new connections and moving our trade away from the US. This can only benefit us if its continued and sustained for a number of years into the future.
