There's always politics. Veteran to run for mayor Posted By IAN ELLIOT, THE WHIG-STANDARD Posted 2 hours ago A man who describes himself as a pot-smoking veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder who hates to leave his house is running for mayor in Kingston. Greg Soucie says he is a...

The kind of war hero about whom movies are made

I used to live in the Arctic and that one has been kept alive in the oral history up there.

CF Seeks "Co-Publisher" for Naval Reserve History Book

It's only a discrepancy of 13 years. Is there not a saying along the lines of "government work" and "close enough?"

29 Apr 10: CF Wainwright Pers "Arrested For Alleged Drug Trafficking"

Now and then an enterprising individual will surprise you. Here in Kingston last month a private was convicted of robbing four different drugstores at gunpoint to obtain his poison of choice, which was Oxy. You don't see a lot of that. He's still on the payroll of the federal government...

    Eric, Prince Of Blackwater

Timbit: Last night I was reading a WWII-era screed by a U.S. admiral published in one of the Navy publications of the day about the barbarity of U-boats and German destroyers sinking American naval ships and merchantmen, painting a vivid picture of ships sinking in the night surrounded by...

"Bono and Bob Geldof to Guest-Edit The Globe and Mail"

Well, to be fair, it's not like these two have jobs or anything. They've got time on their hands to guest-edit newspapers and to tell the rest of us what we should do. I mean, Live Aid happened when I was like, 15. What's Bob Geldolf done since then?

    Sea Kings in Afghanistan

Happened across this rather cool gallery of Sea Kings on ops in Helmand this morning, and let the record show that I made no jokes about their primary close support capability being an awesome ability to drop on insurgents from any altitude without any warning. I did not go there...

    Are aircraft carriers obsolete?

Lords of War and some other milbloggers are weighing in on the subject and questioning whether carriers are a good use of defence money or have a future at all: First F-22s, then tanks, now carriers? 03 May 2010 Posted 20:28 In addition to the lamentations over the capping of the F-22 Raptor...

We have a war poet and didn't know it

Probably old news to many of you, but Canada's first imbedded war poet(ess) is back from Afgh., and while I don't usually like poetry that doesn't rhyme stuff with 'Nantucket', her stuff is pretty impressive. Her site is www.warpoet.ca and here's an article. Poet in a war zone Posted By IAN...

    RMC Christmas Leave

Well, I may not be a highly-educated future officer and perhaps even a future CDS, but even I can go to the RMC site and look at the academic calendar to get an idea of what the dates are. Perhaps you should too. http://www.rmc.ca/aca/ac-pe/ug-apc/index-eng.asp

Well, I learned something today. Hope it didn't displace any existing knowledge, such as where I left my car keys.

    Are aircraft carriers obsolete?

Actually, no. As has been pointed out several times in this thread, one of the main roles of a carrier group is as a deterrent, something that will park itself off your coastline and be a very visible reminder of what will happen if diplomacy fails in a blunt way that no number of stealth...
