    shipboard footwear

Seeing that seaboot makes me wonder: should I be asking for some more features in my bespoke combat boots?  Certainly I know that if the navy wants me to wear this seaboot & I need it custom-made, I will be able to get it.  But I'd rather do this ahead of time before I actually need the sea boot...

    shipboard footwear

I went to the shoemaker today & ordered the boots.  Another question came up during the ordering: are the 'nitrile oil/acid resistant' soles on the ankle boots meant to protect against liquids aboard ship?  If so, ought I to attempt to get that feature in the steel-toed combat boots?

    shipboard footwear

What are the features of appropriate shipboard footwear?  I am presently ordering custom made service boots (to fit orthotics, you see) and the option of steel-toed combat boots came up.  This ordering process is rather hard as I am doing it while having only experienced IAP & 1 yr university...

    The current navy uniform

I have heard the USN did the same thing we did with their uniforms in the 1970s & ended up turning back as (apparently) most sailors liked the old square rig better.  Personally, I loved the rig when I was a sea cadet (we wore it as ceremonial day & mess dress).  It was perhaps the only article...

    Naval Mess Dress

The 17 wing tailor orders from Claymore (clothes, or something like that) in BC.  Sorry I don't have the phone # anymore but I think they're the only company making the braid today.  Costs about $300 for the whole set: -8 mess jacket buttons (2 of which link together) -4 waistcoat buttons...

    The current navy uniform

I think you are able to purchase them from the QM.  I wish the beret badge had gold wire, now that I think of it.

    Officer-of-the-watch vs officer-of-the-day

Thanks for the reply.  It all makes sense now.

    Officer-of-the-watch vs officer-of-the-day

Perhaps I heard incorrectly that OOW was subordinate to OOD (it is certainly contrary to the fact that the 2 positions don't occur simultaneously).  Perhaps I am thinking of some sort of training position as assistant OOW/OOD (what is the name of such a position?).

    Officer-of-the-watch vs officer-of-the-day

Am I correct in thinking that OOW & OOD are basically the same role, but OOW performs at sea, switching every watch while the OOD performs in harbour, switching every day?  I ask because I have heard OOW is subordinate to OOD.

Drug use/drug testing in the CF (merged)

I'd like to pull out the old conservative/traditionalist argument: let's just keep these marihuana laws as they've been since it seems to be working out pretty well for the Canadian people. But then, when one realises the illegality of marihuana arose from business interest (rather than...

Rules on wearing individual uniform pieces outside of military events?

A clarification: I was mistaken in my attack against miniature medals.  As I had recently seen one, court-mounted, up close & then seen no court-mounted full-medals, I did not realise that it was the court-mounting, not the size of the medal which I thought ugly.  I now revise my position to...

    Mess Dress

Patterns can be gotten at your base tailor.  Simply take them to any civilian tailor (preferably one who has made these things before, if you don't exactly know what the finished product will look like) & he will laugh at the amount of detail NDHQ puts into what sort of shoulder padding they...

    Paying Compliments (Saluting, Verbal Address)

I did read that, but I was rather hoping for an explicit statement that, yes, you sing O Canada when it is played during colours.  Anyway, thanks for the answer, Her Majesty's forces shall delight in my wonderful rendition of O Canada henceforth.

    Mess Dress

The CF dress instructions contain this information.  Although I suppose what with all the nuances of each army unit's dress, it would be simpler to just ask your QM.

    Paying Compliments (Saluting, Verbal Address)

It seems my question has been overlooked due to the other posts being of a far more interesting nature.  However, I must ask once again: When O Canada is played while the flag is hoisted (i.e. the time known as 'colours' in the Navy), shall I sing?  I ask because there is a rule saying 'one...

    Retain the Monarchy in Canada?

Although it is not the current definition of 'republican' the system does not traditionally exclude monarchy, aristocracy, or democracy.  E.g. Rome had several emporers at once. That the people form the sovereign does not prevent them from choosing 1 magistrate (i.e. the king or queen) to head...

    Supplemental benefits: orthopedic footwear

This makes sense, I couldn't understand why the CF would pay for all the stuff listed in the info guide.  Are the 2 pr boots to be selected by me or some medical authority?  I imagine I will probably be wearing my parade boots the most out of any footwear they gave me, so would I have the option...

    Supplemental benefits: orthopedic footwear

I've flat feet.   Not 'get some Dr Scholls & be gellin' flat feet, but the nasty kind that needs orthopedic footwear/orthotics.   So I went to an MO, who sent me to a podiatrist who said I needed orthotics.   She preferred to have the orthotics separate from the footwear so that they could be...

    Paying Compliments (Saluting, Verbal Address)

Pardon my ambiguity in quoting the drill manual. I was commenting that checking the arms while on the march was not within the manual (& now that I've checked more thoroughly, it's not while double-marching either).  This would also suggest that when the sr officer returns the salute, other...

    Paying Compliments (Saluting, Verbal Address)

The checking arms thing seems to be a myth (or perhaps an old custom) as it is not mentioned in the drill manual, ch 1, s 2. I.e. just like civilians are supposed to do (but don't as it seems we need strict rules to continue formalities in society).   The checking arms is a compliment to be...
