    Westboro Church Protest Mega-thread

Hardly "spouting off".  But anyway: The point, which others have expressed more eloquently than I can, is that it doesn't much matter who they are. I've done some reading about them and I join the majority here in condemning them.  Based on what I've read they're awful people who deserve all...

    Status on Victoria-class Submarines?

I thought the article was pretty neutral.  You almost seem to be suggesting that it wasn't biased enough in the other direction since it didn't go out of its way to point out who was in power when the submarines were procurred.

    Westboro Church Protest Mega-thread

This is the bit I was referring to: "A few made it to the funeral but were ushered away to be questioned about a crime they might have possibly been involved in. Turns out, after a few hours of questioning, that they were not involved and they were allowed to go on about their business." As I...

    Westboro Church Protest Mega-thread

Of course I condemn anyone who would protest at a funeral, but I hardly think having the police knowingly detain people who haven't done anything illegal is an appropriate way to deal with it.  As satisfying as it is, it's a disturbing way for them to act.

    Sup Tech - Reserves

If you look around the site for a bit you'll find some good information on this.  But to give you a start, as a reservist you join a specific unit in your local area, and won't be posted to other units every few years as a regular force member would be.  Since reserve service is mostly part-time...

    Questions about joining the Reserves

I don't mean to sound confrontational, but how do you know why the police don't hire them?

    RMC After a University Degree

To add to George's answer, while credits may be transferable I suspect that only a limited number of them will be applicable to an engineering degree.  Without knowing the details of the requirements for that degree at RMC, I'd speculate (based on my time at a civilian university) that you might...

CF Officer Trades: Transfer to Civilian Jobs

The very good point that a couple of others have made is that the general "officer skills", which are mostly intangible, are likely to be attractive to employers in any field if you can adequately describe them when the time comes. For MARS officers specifically, I would imagine that there...

    General questions

I think the point is that it's a logistical challenge to invade a country on the other side of the largest ocean on the planet -- at the far end of a very long supply chain.  But it isn't insurmountable: aircraft can be made to travel that distance, and it wouldn't be the first surprise air...

    !949 Mutinies'

Not secret at all.  You might find one in the library. Try the Maritime Command Museum in Stad.  I'd be surprised if they didn't have a copy. I think I've got a digital copy around somewhere.  I'll take a look.

Hackers, viruses threaten online voting validity

Agreed, and I'd add that it would only be a matter of time -- and not very much of it -- before we start having elections decided by the Supreme Court à la hanging chad (etc.) scandal.

    Age Limits to Join

It was still possible to be a cadet and a primary reservist at the same time until quite recently.

Brains of liberals, conservatives structured differently

The sample size is a factor in statistics, but the degree of correlation within the sample also matters .  (The "p" value mentioned in the comic strip posted above relates.)  There's no single magic number for the sample size needed to study a given population.

    Military word of the day

Restrictive, because not all destroyers are DDHs! Nice to see someone else who knows the difference, in a world where English is going so quickly to the dogs.

Question in regards to joining the forces.

Just to help you get your terminology straight, we have the Canadian Armed Forces (more usually called the Canadian Forces) as our military service.  There's no Royal Military of Canada.  You may be thinking the Royal Military College, which is the Canadian Forces' university. In general, if...

    Canada's Navy in the 1980s

You've probably read it already, but in case you haven't I'd suggest a look at The Admirals.  It's the proceedings from a MARCOM history conference held a few years ago -- maybe 2005.  Each paper discusses one CNS, CMS, or their equivalents.  Several of the living ones, who would date from the...

OMG!!! Oxford English Dictionary adding LOL!!!

Sort of.  The OED is a descriptive dictionary, so it documents the language as it's used and does not pass judgment on how good, or not, a word is.  It doesn't purport to say what's right -- only what is being written and spoken by a broad segment of society. You can't write to them and say...

    A Canadian White Ensign proposal

I think the idea is that battle honours represent a connection to a past that, in many cases, no living person remembers -- just like other symbols such as the White Ensign. However, the Canadian navy has in fact lost some battle honours: a number of years ago, as directed by someone who could...
