My ideal navy (aka not holding my breath aka not in my wildest dreams)

That point in non-negotiable  ;) First off, I understand the sheer numbers in personal needed to make my above "Ideal Navy" work are quite staggering and in the context of the CF unrealistic. With that said, if the CDS aimed high and told the government this is whats needed to carry out your...

My ideal navy (aka not holding my breath aka not in my wildest dreams)

I'd intend on offering up our four, civilian manned tankers and stores ship to the American's Military Sealift Command with an eye on in corpatering them into the US system of shuttle ships, which in turn resupply the larger US AOEs and in my plan would also supply our two large AORs well on...

My ideal navy (aka not holding my breath aka not in my wildest dreams)

First off, I must say that this topic has brought up many intresting ideas/concepts/dreams and even though some are out there, IMHO it's good to think and plan big........in the hopes that when the other side (in this case government) counters with their "plan", hopfully we end up with...

AAD and NGS (split from JSS Amphib Capability thread)

Why does the army require "3 interchangeable ground units" (to "guarantee healthy rotations") and the Navy is only afforded one "Expeditionary Group"? IOW, what is the point of having three army formations for rotation when the navy can only deploy one third of the time? Do you plan to increase...

AAD and NGS (split from JSS Amphib Capability thread)

Playing with fire with going that low.........What would you do if one of your DDGs is in a major refit and the sole deployable one gets into an accident or suffers a mechanical fault (or sunk)? Scrub the deployment, go ahead without the AAD? So you are proposing about six LPD (at about a...

    New Coast Guard Ships

The passage makes perfect sense, with 200 nm being the boundary of our exclusive economic zone, thus the author notes that the vessels will have the ability to operate outside of our EEZ.

AOR Replacement & the Joint Support Ship (Merged Threads)

Of course, thats why I don't advocate that approach.......thats not too say the CDS shares the same views though, based of the speculation in the press of further mutating the role of JSS to include an enlarged troop carrying capability and DND's track record of doing suspect things.

Fleet Managment: Army plan for pre-positioning eqpt

How about taking a page out of the Americans book, and instead of basing all this kit in Canadian port cities, put it into a large, climate controlled, RO/RO and have it forward based to either Diego Garica or Guam with a small skeleton crew? I don't know what the logistic foot print would be...

AOR Replacement & the Joint Support Ship (Merged Threads)

Though I would never advocate the idea, unless out of necessity, in the past (presnet?) carriers (and USN Battleships) have been tasked with preforming a limited RAS capability for their escorts when no AOR was available or able to keep up with the task group...........Is the CDS thinking about...

Beef & the Border - Here we go Again

[tin-foil hat]Could this be the result of PM PM's handling of BMD? Just to throw into the mix........the United States Justice (Richard Cebull) that granted the injunction was one of GWB's first judicial nominees and (IIRC) the first nominee confirmed by the (Republican led) Senate.[/tin-foil hat]

David Rudd: Navy's days are numbered

I thought the government was not opposed to purchasing JSS off-shore, granted that may be due to the lacking Canadian Shipyards........Hopefully, David Emerson could influence the decision.

David Rudd: Navy's days are numbered

Thats very true, but if one or more of these "plans" comes to fruition, crewing would be factored in(I'd hope as much).........Pure speculation on the part of myself, which I base on conjecture, rumour, and the media, let's say the upcoming Liberal defence review finds no future in replacing the...

    30 MUSD for a new CHINOOK CH-47F

Too be honest, I don't really know. One would think that based on the USMC choice to go with new builds, the 1/5 number was skewed and/or unattainable. With that said, ~ 130 million (CDN) per unit does sound resonable (to me) when compared to the purchase of the 28 Cyclones..........I would...

    30 MUSD for a new CHINOOK CH-47F

Here we go: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/ch-53x.htm I wonder if another favorable deal could be reached with Sikorsky for 12-18 CH-53X......

    30 MUSD for a new CHINOOK CH-47F

That was the original intent, but I believe it was decided it would be more cost effective to purchase new builds......I'll see what I can dig up. Though it's not anything official on the CH-53x order, Sikorsky is still offering the CH-53 as one of it's five production models...

    30 MUSD for a new CHINOOK CH-47F

I agree with you on the size limitations the of "NH-90 sized" helicopters, which, as you said shouldn't preclude the S-92........as for the CH-53, yes they are still in production and they are replacing earlier versions of the same aircraft. The Osprey is supposed to replace the Sea Knight.

    30 MUSD for a new CHINOOK CH-47F

I wonder why the author excludes a troop carrying version of the S-92 or the CH-53X.........from a Liberal prospective, I fail to see why either of these choices would be politically upsetting, if anything, a Sikorsky purchase could further the political spin for the liberals choice of Sea King...

AOR Replacement & the Joint Support Ship (Merged Threads)

I would tend to think that any command staff would come out of the USMC number of 700-800 personnel. Here's an intresting note from the USN LPD-17 site: http://www.pms317.navy.mil/index2.asp With that, I'd tend to think the number and compostion of command staff would depend on each given...

David Rudd: Navy's days are numbered

I tend to agree with you that the LPD-17s would be out of our price range, but I would think that any LHD type ship would look and sound a lot like Harper's "hybrid carriers" from last years election, and in purchasing such a class of ships would mean that 17.3% of our Hospitals would be closed...
