I like the idea of the B-52 as much as the next person, but it's a little disconcerting that the military that has some of the world's most high-tech whiz-bang stuff has to bring back 60-year old aircraft from AMARG.

Imagine if we did the same.

It's really kind of interesting. The USAF has three types of bombers, the B1, B2 and B52. The 2021 Edition of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) Primer lists some of the costs associated with a notional 12 aircraft squadron (its called notional because not every squadron has the same number of aircraft). The costs are set out at page 88 of Chapter 4.

In short, the B52 squadron has the least number of people B 52 - 3,420, B1 - 4,790 and B2 - 8,810 and the least amount of annual costs - B 52 - $810 mil; B1 - $1,200 mil and B2 - $2,120 mil. (Note: these are cumulative direct, indirect and overhead personnel and costs)

Considering that the airframes have upgraded avionics, defence systems and weapons which are of value in both low conflict and high conflict scenarios, they provide value for annual expenditures.

Just as an aside, the same publication at page 91 shows that a C 17 squadron of 12 aircraft has 3/4 of the people and annual costs to operate than a C130 squadron.

While it is interesting, I just have to say this:

Well, technically, the F-15E is also a bomber... of the 'deep strike' variety:
