The federal NDP has never been in the position of having to run a government, so it is undistracted by reality. This increases the likelihood it will never have to run a government.
Provincial NDP parties can and do form governments, and are therefore constrained by reality. It has taken decades to absorb what the Scandinavian "socialists" learned long ago, but they have learned that binding the mouths of the kine that tread the grain is counterproductive. Some, like Eby's government in BC, still think they can pick and choose what things they allow in the pursuit of the prosperity that funds their spending habits. They are slow learners encumbered by dogma.
A practically-minded NDP politician wanting to make the jump from provincial to federal politics should move into the LPC. That is another filter that decreases the quality of the federal NDP.
A party of workers is still a party, and parties require bosses. The NDP has managed to select out most of the actual workers and replace them with people who talk aspirationally about some kind of idealized worker. Meanwhile, too many of them get caught expressing how much they despise the kinds of people who are actual workers, and their habits (eg. likes action movies, shops at Walmart, buys coffee at Tim Hortons, eats franchise fast food instead of artisanal pizza, etc). Eventually, the workers should be expected to seek someone else to support.
