2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

At some point this starts becoming noise.

Pathetic.

On the plus side, maybe some of the internal political pressure down south on this is having an effect if this is the kind of flaccid rhetoric he’s now turning to.

The new normal. America is not our friend.
America is its people. They are mostly our friends. There are substantial limits on what a president can force the people, courts, Congress, states, ordinary individuals serving in public agencies, politicians of his own party who want to be re-elected and not ostracized, etc, to do.

By that logic then the people can be blamed for a whole lot of stuff. We can differentiate between how the state acts and its people. It isn’t that hard.

Have to wonder what the atmosphere will be amongst the troops in Norway during this exercise. Will they be professional and not acknowledge the obvious tension that will exist? Will the Euro troops shun/ignore the US troops and not mix with them if given the chance? Will there be no affect and they will mix freely and be friendly towards each other?

I'd love to be an observer, with complete access to all areas during the exercise and just watch and listen. Much I think could be learned.

As I recall, the thoughts of troops on large scale exercises in Arctic Norway were mainly concerned with 'how can I keep my feet warm' and 'who's going to f*ck us around today' ;)

I agree that America is its people and I agree that greater than 60% of them would still be classified by us as their friend and by them as our friend.
But currently America is not 'We the People' but 'Me the Leader'.

Currently, at present state, our best direction is to stay the course and see how the chips are played by the American people come the end of the mid-term elections. Three outcomes may occur -
1) The results are such that nothing changes for us. Things will be neither worse, not better and thus we need to survive until Jan 2028 and see what happens next.
2) The results are a resounding defeat for Trump and his form of governing. Impeachment proceedings move at a rapid pace forward, censorship of Trump follows and he's a neutered dog for the rest of his term. In that case, best for us to move cautious, don't gloat, assess who our 'champions' (if there are any) are in the US and be ready for Jan 2028 and possible improvements between us.
3) The results are a resounding victory for Trump - he has complete control over both the Senate and the House and things move quickly down hill for us. This is the scenario where being a right mad honey badger will be necessary. Close ranks and wait for Jan 2028 and see what may come our way.

Correct. So focus on "Trump" or "the Trump administration". Set blame squarely where it lies.

Fully agree. I travel to the US for work several times a month, and have never felt unwelcome, or experienced any animosity. In fact, many Americans often apologize or express dismay at how the current administration is treating Canada. I've heard on more than one occasion "we love you guys" or similar.

In my recent experiences, the current administration and its hyper-partisan supporters don't represent the views of the vast majority of Americans I interact with.

Even if the Democrats win, either the midterms or next election, so fucking what?

We pretend like nothing happened, business as usual?

The republicans are always just 4 years away from doing this all over again? We need to act as if America is a bipolar psych patient with access to guns. Sure they may be on their meds for a few years, but one day they could be at your front door with a shotgun aimed at your face.

To sum it up, your anti-America. No matter what they do.

I wouldnt count on a Democratic administration. They remain vulnerable on immigration and what is a woman. I dont know if the Trump administrations incompetence is enough to move that needle. Witness his reelection. Could Vance be the Carney to Trumps Trudeau?

Yes, we try.

What we don't do is lose our heads and make excessively nice with countries with much, much worse human rights records than the US. Except for not fighting a war against a country it would like to occupy right now, China is not much indistinguishable from Russia. We should treat it approximately the same.

The day the CPP launches punishing tariffs on Canada while musing about making us the 24th province, I promise I will
Occupation of Tibet (for decades) and atrocious treatment of Uighurs not enough for you?
