2026 US-Denmark Tensions/End of NATO

Canada has 1.2M registered firearms. There's several time more that are unregistered/unlicensed/illegal. It makes Canada top 20, possibly top 10 for per capita firearms ownership in the world. Even the government snatching up some guns (even though I disagree with the program) would not change this reality.

So no, it's a stupid talking point and a diversion to go from focusing on the threat to, "But da Liberals....."

The ban includes approx 5 million firearms, most of them being the type that would be useful in an insurection. (Of which there will be compensation for about 135,000). Of those it's reported that 150,000 are AR-15 type and variants. Many made by Colt Canada including MMR upper receivers a bunch of HK416s. 50 cals are also on the ban list. There are many civilian owned Barrett, McMillan and Accuracy International fifties.

How many C7s does the CF have in inventory ? How many sniper rifles? I don't think the destruction of all these civilian owned firearms is inquonsequential to the ability of Canada to have an insurgency.

Could you humor me so I don't have to spend hours going through page after page of posts?
Publicly available there is this -
"On 11 April 2025, the base commander, Colonel Susannah Meyers, was relieved of command by the Trump administration for "undermining" Vice President Vance after his visit by sending an email to base personnel (staffed by Americans, Canadians, Danes, and Greenlanders) that included: "I spent the weekend thinking about Friday's visit [by VP Vance]—the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you. I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the US administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base. I commit that, for as long as I am lucky enough to lead this base, all of our flags will fly proudly—together".

On here, others have stated that there are a small number stationed there now.

Lastly, there is piece of publicly available news from a few days ago.

I'm actually a lot of fun in arctic tents, especially when I refuel and start the stove from my sleeping bag.

I’ve told you before, there is an entire world of democratic middle powers we could be making better deals with who are also not happy with the two superpowers whom we share values with. I’m all in favour of trade and engagement; not “strategic partnership” and being one of China’s “old friends” (look it up).

It makes no sense to hop from the embrace of one aggressive authoritarian tyranny to another. It’s like being asked to pick Pol Pot or Hitler.
Right, so trade relations with India and South Korea to make up for being in a trade war with China and the USA. Because as discussed, we have trade agreements with most everyone else.

The math aint mathing.

And like Stephen Harper said, I’m willing to take an economic hit to remain independent and maintain our liberal (in a broad sense) values and less susceptible to foreign interference, influence and intimidation campaigns from malevolent powers.

I really don’t know why you see Beijing as more benevolent than the Trump Administration. Neither can be trusted.

Yep. I just wish he would stop being so eager to jump into bed with Beijing.
There are probably still a lot of people connected to the LPC who stuck money into China in the '90s and early '00s who haven't been able to extricate it yet (if ever). For a while, it was the go-to investment darling, and the LPC was leading the charge.

What do you believe our choices to be?
There are half a dozen countries in that part of the world whose collective GDP is about half of China's. Lots of other opportunities for access to large and emerging markets.

This rupture in the joint defence agreement would likely see France or Britain, nuclear-weapon states, being called on to provide support and defence for Canada against the U.S.”

If the US were to invade Canada nobody would come to our aid militarily. They neither have the capability or the will.

Yep, no one is coming. No country on earth even china would be able to bring a meaningful force to fight the US halfway across the globe. That's even if there was the will to do it.

So your assumption is article 5 is dead and no one's coming to help? Guess we are Ukraine now against russia. Except in our case the enemy is competent.

There are other tools in the toolboxes, available to any country to wield on behalf of any second country beset by a third country. But countries will make accommodations with egregious human rights abusers for the sake of preserving an export market, so the question of will is mainly just a measure of their self-interest.
