Greenland does not need medical assistance from other countries, Denmark has said, after Donald Trump said he was sending a hospital ship to the autonomous Danish territory that he wants to acquire.

“The Greenlandic population receives the healthcare it needs. They receive it either in Greenland, or, if they require specialised treatment, they receive it in Denmark. So it’s not as if there’s a need for a special healthcare initiative in Greenland,” the country’s defence minister, Troels Lund Poulsen, told the Danish broadcaster DR on Sunday.

In Greenland, as in Denmark, access to healthcare is free. There are five regional hospitals across the vast Arctic island, with the Nuuk hospital serving patients from all over the territory.

Mette Frederiksen, the Danish prime minister, defended Denmark’s healthcare system, writing on Facebook that she was “happy to live in a country where there is free and equal access to health for all. Where it’s not insurances and wealth that determine whether you get proper treatment.”

lol, Denmark publicly saying that there’s a US nuc sub off the coast of Greenland…that’s got to piss off the Brass of the USN.
Have to wonder if that boat has or will enter our waters….

The injured/ill sailor was picked up 7nm off the coast in territorial waters… Presumably if the sub was surfaced there it was by choice, and presumably with permission. A CASEVAC would not have been an instantaneous thing.

Ongoing bullshit notwithstanding, the U.S. and Denmark remain NATO allies and I expect military transit of each others’ waters remains generally routine and uncontroversial.

I hope the sailor’s ok.

Out of curiosity what capabilities did you guys have to deal with a potentially infectious patient in an austere medevac like that?

I don’t think we did anything other than flight gear. When hoisting you have a face shield on… we used to use a suppression cup I think we got from the army. Left him in the back, move forward, short transit back to mom.

But it was a long time ago… 30 years. sigh

I would expect that they didn't kiss the patient or ask to borrow his toothbrush.

If the Americans had ground assets in number in the area, I would be very worried. Most of the medical staff on the hospital ships are actually Reservists - and extremely expensive to maintain, and they don't like being away from their private practice. That means the hospital ship is usually planned to be one of the last major assets moved into an area before the start of a land campaign. I believe that in GWII, they sailed the hospital ship to Guam, without medical staff, and then flew the staff in at the last moment, cast off, and the war started within a day or so of it arriving in the Gulf.

In this case - probably just another ramble from a dementia twisted brain.

Doubtful? I think this is something his Greenland envoy brought up or something along those lines? You would have to be utterly addled to go from “sick US submariner goes on Danish helicopter” to “send an imaginary hospital ship to Greenland”.

I wonder what level of readiness the Mercy & Comfort are kept at? Can they sail at the drop of a hat? Where are they in terms of refits/repairs/etc? Do they have a full load-out of equipment, food, and fuel? What about medical supplies that have a shorter shelf-life?

Mercy is deducted in Mobile, Alabama. Comfort is also there, docked undergoing maintenance.

They both are normally prepared to deploy within 5 days from their reduced operating status (ROS). Obviously, that is likely not achievable if they are in dry dock or in a maintenance cycle.
