If there are US wildfire crews in Canada, I hope they are treated with respect and gratitude.

Never an issue on the fireline. When you're sweating beside the person beside you trying to achieve the same goals it's mutual respect.

Laughs and jokes between differences sure...but it's a mark of professional pride to be chosen to represent your agency/province/country when on export and you get better than average crews normally.

Frankly now the joke is where/when should we meet up next....some US crews I've seen 3 and 4 times. Same with other international resources.

Makes me think of some of the RCN and CAF members deploying, backfilling the next deployment, deploying etc....our deployments are just shorter so easier on the family side than the multi-month CAF taskings

Our C17s are run ragged supporting CAF operations around the globe, they aren't free for this sort of use.

If we had 3x the number of C-17, we still wouldn't have enough for all of the CAF uses for them.

The problem in Canada is that once military resources are loaned to provinces, they see it as an entitlement and cut back on their own investment in resources…

How true! Politicians and the public generally have no understanding or appreciation for how huge Our country is & generally how sparsely populated; this is a result of most of the population and therefore politicians being concentrated along our southern border.

I have been advocating for more involvement from private industry for Canadian disaster response, so last week’s announcement of Amazon Canada’s new disaster relief hub near Edmonton made me pause and reflect.

The corporation’s announcement focuses on wildfire supplies and logistics and how they may help communities and responders receive needed material faster. The larger question is whether corporate stockpiles and their MOUs with NGOs supplement public capacity or allow governments to step back from it. Drawing on my graduate work examining Canada’s National Emergency Strategic Stockpile (NESS), I reflected on who remains responsible when a stockpile is privately owned and access runs through selected partners.

Relief can be shared; responsibility cannot.

Small additional her, for those who don't know: I can board a Boeing 737 in Montreal and fly North for two and a half hour .... and land, still being in Quebec at Kuujuak, which is not even the North furthest point of the province. After the first 30 minutes, I would have run out of population centers and rosds, and human built large scale facilities.The last two hours would be over emptiness emptiness and more emptiness.
